iPad 3 release also this year?

An iPad 3 in September. Not a chance in hell.

An iPad 2 with a "special" feature (iPad 2.5) in September. I can see that.

I don't know if you people already considered it... but there simply isn't a product cycle for the ipad. There has only been 1 version and you absolutely can't make any predictions on future cycles.

Yeah, Apple will launch iPad 2 then iPad 3 a few months later...

We have a loser! You seem to misunderstand the difference between a prediction and what somebody deems as fact.

Based on Apple's past product launches, you absolutely can make a prediction on the iPad cycle, and it's a fair assumption that Apple will release iPad 2 in April 2011 or thereabouts. It's also entirely possible that Apple might do as some people suggest, and that is delay until September. In itself, not such a good move because they really need to stagger their releases if they can.

So, my prediction is that we'll get iPad 2 in April 2011, and iPad 3 a year later. There, and you said you absolutely can't make a prediction. Well, I just did, so... If I'm right or wrong, it's still a prediction.

Can't argue with a confident man!

Well, you can, of course! :)
But let history be the referee!

It isn't about predicting product cycles
As seen in the Buyer's Guide, these can vary widely at times from product to product

It is about marketing strategy

My feeling is, all the speculation about a fall release for a 3rd generation iPad is more wishful thinking by those who are underwhelmed by the rumors of the 2nd generation's updates and feature set, and hopeful for yet another upgrade sooner rather than later

iPad 3 test by Steve Jobs?

This is beyond wishful thinking. As far as product cycles go, it's less about predictability of the iPad and more of where the iPad fits into Apple's release schedule. While there's no question Apple has the scale to introduce multiple lines in a quarter it's pretty unlikely that they would do so. They want to keep having "best quarter ever" reports and blowing your wad in a single quarter (new iPads, iPods, AppleTV) seems to be a stretch. It may be that iPods are gradually going to phase out as a primary business unit and that's when we could expect to see the iPad step in.

I was thinking the same too "not going to happen" Then when I read Gruber wondering if there will be a "HD" version of the iPad 2 coming later this year that was somewhat intriguing. It corroborates well with all the hoopla we've heard about the high resolution display and it solves the cost question: that Apple will charge higher for iPads with higher resoution by offering them as the premium iPad.

Still not convinced, but interesting one nonetheless.

You can, but in the case of somebody saying you can't make a prediction, they will lose. Anybody can make a prediction and base that prediction on anything they like. The accuracy of those predictions over time is irrelevant.

If Apple comes out with an iPad HD the big question is if they could make any money off it. I see lots of people saying they won't buy an iPad unless it has a retina display. I don't care myself as long as it has the dual core processor and GPU discussed previously.
I have to wonder if those people who say they want a retina display are willing to pay for it. If there were a retina display iPad would you pay what it would cost? Even with 6 months lead time to develop and crank out these displays for the Fall, I would expect about a $200 premium above the iPad2.
Would these people pay that?? I'm thinking not at least not in numbers to make it profitable. I don't see Apple going out on a limb like that. There could be a retina display Touch with a larger screen though.

What Gruber is saying is that a new device will appear in April.
And another new device will appear in September. And BOTH will be on the shelves at the same time.

.

Exactly.

How many types of iMacs are there?

How many types of MacBooks?

How many types of MacBook Pros?

Why on earth would there just be one type of iPad?

Heck, there are 2 selling iPhones right now, the 3GS and the 4...

if apple updates the iPads in sept, I think it will only be adding a LTE version...

it MIGHT also add the rumored retina display but I doubt it.

edit: ok or maybe it is just will be a 7" ipad

A lot of good and convincing guesses. I'm gonna go with ipad 2 in a few weeks to a month, new IOS release in September and ipad 3 shortly follow. Bottom line: who the F knows.

Only thing I think is possible is that they release a similar, if not slightly lower specced and 7" model for christmas.

The only reason I can think of them doing such a thing would be to cash in for xmas. I think the current release time for iPad, missing out on christmas, is just a really silly/wierd business move for them. THey would have made a killing if they released iPad2 at Xmas. SPose they were waiting to see what the competition would do.

Wouldn't this be a dumb move? I am sure there are plenty of people who buy the iPad 2 would be more than willing to shell out some more money for an improved iPad 2 with a retina display or something.

Basically, it seems backwards to me to release an improved iPad 2 in September when a lot of people buy the iPad 2 in April. Not many people can buy 2 in one year. They could be missing out on a lot of potential buyers who would be willing to pay a little more in September.

So if anything, I think it would be a smaller iPad 2 at a reduced price. I think less people would be upset this way and I think Apple would make the most money this way

Yea remember the basis of speculation about this is that there will be a new member to the iPad family in the Fall and the iPad2 will NOT be replaced. So again this product would not be an iPad3 replacing the iPad2 and thereby causing a great disturbance in the force. It will be a different product and calling it the iPad3 is just confusing the issue.
I vote until we know more just calling it the iPadX
