iPad 3 to Gain Improved Cameras? iPad 2 to Carry On at Lower Price?

Yeah I agree. Can't blame Apple too much on it though because they wanted to differentiate the iPad from iPhone/iPod touch, hence made it much bigger.

I like the increased competition because it means Apple has to bring it's A-game every year...which can only be good for us consumers :)

Caution: your kids, or any other Kindle Fire user, can purchase on the Fire, and you have no way of locking them out.

Actually, I agree with you here & as far as making a smaller 7" iPad, we should never say never. I would really like to see the follwing line up;

7" iPad (16GB) - $299
9.7" iPad 2 (16GB, 32GB) - $399, $499
9.7" iPad 3 (32GB, 64GB) - $599, $699

Of course I'm referring to the Wi-Fi only models but you get the point.

I think all the rumors are spot on about a smaller iPad... but none of them have once said it was a 7". 7.85... which is quite a bit more screen real estate than 7" on each diagonal.

So Steve Jobs said never to a 7"... this wouldn't make him a liar.
There are also rumors brewing everywhere that the iPad 2 is going to sell for $299, but I wonder if maybe it wouldn't be an iPad mini at that price point. The display is the most expensive component in a tablet, and just those few inches make a huge difference in the cost factor. At $100 more than a Fire, it would probably still wipe the floor with it.

I did not get the first iPad because it did not have a front facing camera, I did not get the iPad 2 because I wanted a retina display.

Apple I want an Apple 3 with retina display. Thats all.

A better camera would be nice but I use my iPhone 4 and DSRL camera for photos. More memory ate the same price is always welcome.

Wake me up when iPad 5 is announced. . . . :p Really - my iPad works just great. I will not buy a new one anytime soon.

Apple Rumor Control:
The electronics show is on and we have no product to release.
I know, let's leak totally predictable speculation and see if the tech press will talk about that instead of CES.

It always works for the mobile phone shows… ;)

My guess - iPad is the new hotness and it replaces iPhone for mid-year release, and iPhone is moved to Sept because iPods aren't the big seller they used to be. And there's a million BS opportunities between now and then… yawn!

"iPad 3 to Gain Improved Cameras? iPad 2 to Carry On at Lower Price?"

Yes.

Is that an honest question?
Have we learned nothing from the iPhone upgrades?

better camera ? well, can't be worse than the cheap one they put on the iPad2 !

If Apple was a car manufacturer they will first launch an icar with 3 wheels, saying this is amazing. 1 year later they will add a fourth wheel and launch icar2, the most amazing car on the planet ! Yet people (including me) will buy the 3 wheels car.

Don't be surprised at $349.00 16g Wi-Fi iPad 2. :apple:

This would be ideal, of course, but I think it'll make more sense for them to make an 8gb iPad 2 at that price. Many more people will jump on this bandwagon. Personally, I would buy a second iPad at $350 (even if it's only 8gb) and give it to my parents. All they do is browse the web and type a few documents in "Pages"; they only listen to about 60 songs total so 8gb will not be a problem.
Regardless of model, if Apple makes a $350 iPad, that'll mean that it will be one of the cheapest computers you can buy. It will give them enormous advantage.

iPad 2, 8GB, Wi-Fi only, $299 or $349. $399 is WAY too much. Mark my words. A crippling (if not quite mortal) blow to the Kindle Fire.

iPad 3 will follow the current iPad 2 price structure.

I know some people think crippling the iPad 2 by reducing storage is "stupid", but honestly, with iCloud, that's all you need. Or that's all the low-end demographic needs. My mom uses her 16GB iPad 2 *constantly* and I doubt she uses more than 4 GB.

I on the otherhand, spent an extra $100 and got the 32GB version, and in retrospect, haven't really needed the extra space. Sure I filled it with music and apps, and left some space for shooting 720p vid. But honestly, it's not currently a very good device for video. And putting a little bit more of my 300+ GB iTunes collection on my iPad at any given time isn't that big of a convenience.

8 GB is plenty for an entry level model. If you run out of room, delete some large games. If you want a game back again, redownload it for free.

you totally beat me to this!!!! ;)

I think the most successful department at Apple is Marketing. They coined the "retina display" expression, and now people appear to have fallen for it so much that they actually believe just an increase in resolution would be worth changing from an iPad 2 to an iPad 3 (just as some people believe a small voice-control gimmick is worth moving from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4$). I hope Apple will do better than that.

If they do not redesign I still hope the change the position of the speaker. Using your hand to obtain improved sound isn't really optimal as a solution...

In no apple fanboy and have to agree that the whole retina thing is a gimmick in its own way. But I don't think that they will be marketing to people who already have an iPad, I think they are keeping ahead of competition while introducing a product that will incise people who haven't yet bought one. Most people buying an iPad3 will be first time buyers or those upgrading from an iPad1

Or maybe the iPad 2 will actually be discontinued? But I just don't see how its possible to remain at the $499 especially if it will have a retina display..

I've already suspected that the iPad 2 would survive as a budget iPad when the Kindle Fire was released. They need to lower their prices to attract the budget-conscious audience (which is what many fall under).

Improved cameras.

Shouldn't this be filed under 'obvious'?

the whole article should be filed under obvious...

iPad 2 will get discounted by $100... really? You mean like how the iPhone 3Gs and then the iPhone4 and how the iPad 1 were discounted by exactly $100?

i guess the ipad 3 is what the 4S is to the 4. Design wise. I wouldnt mind it though as my ipad 2 wont seem outdated :D

new iphone design but no new ipad design this year. Opposite of last year

that's bull. yes apple are marketing geniuses and often brag about "features" that may not be as magical or revolutionary as they pretend, but Retina Display is an example fail.

as the owner of a 3GS, i've been jealous of iphone 4 owners, not from day 1, but from whatever day i actually got out to an Apple Store and *saw* in person how much crisper, natural, and easier on the eyes the retina display appeared. the thing is freaking beautiful and makes 3GS (in a side-by-side comparison) look like a freaking Colecovision phone. i drool everytime i get my hands on a friend's 4/4S.

eventually i'll be upgrading to the 4S or 5/6 (whatever they call next), and i'll be loving my new retina display.

Siri is cool... i'd use it to set reminders if i had it... but i agree, probably not worth upgrading from 4 to 4S just for that.

I dont understand why there's this talk of squeezing in a processor, having to make the design thicker, etc.

Surly if the iPhone 4S can hold a 7 hour battery, an A5 processor and an amazing camera, the iPad can hold more?

The iPad has more room width ways and height wise, so I can't see why a 10 hour battery, A6 processor, Facetime HD camera and amazing iPhone 4S rear-facing camera isn't possible without increasing thickness?

On top of that build in some new software like Siri and maybe some new apps like iWeb for iPad, or Final Cut for iPad, depending on the processor, and you've got a solid upgrade.

"iWeb for iPad" is a joke right? you're being funny? ;)
there isn't even iWeb for Mac anymore.
or iWeb for the internets.

It seems to me that the next iPad could be screaming fast with a beautiful screen and slightly to vastly better cameras. While the Retina Display is a huge deal for reading

The iPad 2 is already screaming fast, and I don't mean that facetiously. It's a massive boost over the iPad 1, which already felt speedy and smooth.

I have yet to use either of the iPad 2 cameras :)

Retina display is something I'm not fully sold on yet. I've got both an iPhone 4 and iPad 2, and the resolution looks the same to me during normal use--probably because of different viewing distances. But if it's amazing and makes reading easier, sure, great!

The iPad3 better have an improved camera... the iPad2 one is pitiful. So that wouldn't be too unexpected.

The iPad2 at a lower price does seem to be interesting. It would certainly ramp up the pressure on the Kindle and Androids. But I can't see Apple really doing that AND releasing a 7" iPad at the same time. But who knows?
