Ipad 3g gps/requires service to use?

So, from the best buy guy, he said that I have to have 3g service for the gps to work. Is that true? Will it still use triangulation even without the service paid? Anyone tried this?

GPS will work fine without the 3G service being activated or even turned on.

Not required. Triangulation won't work, but simple gps will.
