    Hi guys,

I am interested to buy the iPad 3G but I am worried about the slow speed of 3G networks. The fact that the iPad is not compatible with HSUPA could really hurt the browsing experience. Concerning the download, Apple reported that the iPad 3G is HSDPA but we don't know yet if it's 1,8 Mbit/s, 3,6 Mbit/s, 7,2 Mbit/s or 14,4 Mbit/s.

Could you please do some speed test over 3G using the Speedtest.net app and report here you results ???

It would be helpful if you can report with the following information :

    Place
    Network
    Download (in kbps)
    Upload (in kbps)
    Ping (in ms)

    Thank you !

does ipad get hot when using 3G. I usually got heat issue with me smartphone while connecting 3G.

Battery life as well. I guess it's shorter than surfing by wifi?

    Good news !

But it will be very interesting to see real numbers over different 3G networks.

    3.03 2.93 1.71 2.54 Mbps down
    .25 Mbps up
    1501 ms Ping
    Real numbers.

I've been testing all weekend in Boston and my numbers are very similar. I'm not any kind of expert, but aren't our Latency figures very high?? Mine have ranged anywhere from 500 to 1500++. I've used a few different testing apps, FCC and speedtest.net apps.

That's my normal testing on my MBP with 2.4Ghz on my Airport Extreme. The iPad 3g on the same wireless got 11.51mbps download.

ATT 3G with full bars here in Atlanta is getting 1.42mbps. It's pathetic.

Here are mine, using a server in Washington DC (I'm in Pa).

    Download / Upload

    1.12Mbps / 0.32Mbps

    1.36Mbps / 0.33Mbps

Not as fast as I hoped, but still faster than my iPhone.

7.2Mbps would be nice, or even half of that. But then again, I guess spending $90/month for 3 devices isn't enough.

Damn, lucky! I only get 1.2 on average at work (down by Bayshore) but it always pulls from a server in Germantown

    iPad 3G

Both of these measurements were taken sitting at my desk in my office. It's odd because the last time I tested (at home a couple days ago), the results for upload were nearly identical. Probably a Speedtest server issue.

Those results look very similar to my speed at home on Comcast. This is with a MacBook Air. And when I check with my iPad 3G on the wireless signal, I get nearly the same result as the MBA on wireless.

I'm curious why you are seeing such a difference between your MBP and your iPad 3G on the same wireless signal?

iPad - ATT 3G vs Sprint 4G vs Comcast

I was surprised how fast the iPad 3G can do on AT&T's data network:
    Download: 3754 kbps
    Upload: 330 kbps*
    Ping: 262 ms
    (http://www.speedtest.net/iphone/36762299.png)

Compare that to the iPad WiFi connected to the Sprint 4G Overdrive portable hotspot:
    Download: 3925 kbps
    Upload: 937 kbps*
    Ping: 287 ms
    (http://www.speedtest.net/iphone/35023707.png)

(*Note the UPLOAD speed difference between the 3G and 4G connection)

When I connect to Comcast Cable Internet via the AirPort Extreme, I typically get:
    Download: 15865 kbps
    Upload: 13338 kbps
    Ping: 44 ms
    (http://www.speedtest.net/iphone/37047081.png)

The MacBook Pro gets much higher download speeds on both the Overdrive and Comcast connections (6.5Mbit and 47Mbit respectively).
