What are you doing with your iPad that the 4 isn't powerful enough? Just being told that it's a hardware upgrade means little if the end user experience isn't improved beyond "it's a little faster".
I run a business with my iPad 4s (we've got 4 identical models)---and personally use the Air. There are several instances that are extremely obvious that the power of the Air SMOKES that of the '4'. Photography manipulation is iPhoto, Skitch, PShop Touch, and Filterstorm
all run significantly quicker and without delay in comparison. iMovie and Garage Band---differences in rendering are amazing.....as well as several KORG apps I've got linked via Autobus---any latency issues I worked through have disappeared---and we use these audio apps a LOT!
That said---the ONE example, and if I have an opportunity in the next week or so, I'll shoot a video---every morning I use an app called Early Edition 2. Have since the original iPad (well...it was EE1 back then). It's essentially a glorified RSS aggregator----you can add any feed you want, set it up...and each morning it draws you out a 'Newspaper'. Looks exactly like one, separated in to sections, local and world news, sports, tech, mac, photo....whatever you're into. iPad 4 takes approximately a minute and ten maybe 20 seconds to populate and download the latest paper (I'm on a 100Mb/s download ISP---it's FAST!). The Air....set up identically as the 4, same feeds, etc....it takes LESS than 15 seconds, typically about 10 seconds to populate and 'draw the paper'. Again, first world problems...but it's absolutely amazing the difference, and as a daily workflow---it's the one I recognize each and every morning since buying the Air. Games load faster---apps launch quicker....and I don't think anyone in the thread----Air owner or those that choose to keep the 4 would argue that the 4 is underpowered...Hell, it's still faster than most offerings from any other manufacturer....and is easily the second best tablet on the market
It is obvious that you are more interested in Apple's reputation and prestige than in the actual benefits of what a 64 bit architecture offers and doesn't offer. Engaging in a specifications pissing contest is fine for those "my dad can beat up your dad" arguments but does nothing to address what is being discussed...
No bud---I was responding to YOUR quote "You have assigned yourself "lord over the upgrade" and have determined that lighter is "better", thinner is "better", 64-bit is "better" as if they are incontrovertible facts... newsflash, they're not. You ignore the FACT that the 64-bit OS consumes 20%-30% more RAM for operation than the 32-bit version of that OS and yet the RAM has remained the same at 1GB. Why are you selective in what you choose to point out? Because certainly if your "more is better, less is worse" metric is what you stand by, then "less available RAM is worse"."
It has EVERYthing to do with what's being discussed as it was YOU that I was responding to in the 'discussion!' Newsflash***64bit computing is the way forward....regardless of it using more RAM---I've still got PLENTY of RAM available to run 32 tracks in Garageband without latency---manipulate photos without stutter, render video in a third the time....what is it about you and the 'lack of RAM'? Apparently many MANY millions don't agree with you, seeing how the iPad Air looks to be the fastest and 'most' selling large iPad in it's short 4 year (almost) history.
And yes, indeed....smaller/thinner/lighter IS better in almost ANY situation that pertains to computing. Especially hand held tablets. This is absolutely an "incontrovertible fact" As is 64bit computing in comparison to 32bit. If you've read anything about Qualcomm and Samsung's reaction, you may enlighten yourself
.....and speaking of pissing match, 'my dad can beat up your dad'...
You appear to be contradicting yourself. You say that you can definitely see the Air lasting you through the next generation... and yet you are sure that the iPad 6 will have features that you will have to have and will upgrade.
In a convoluted way, you are saying that the Air is so wonderful it will last you through until the next gen is released. Well duh. Every iPad generation will last at least until the next one.
How long any particular iPad will functionally last depends upon what you use it for. There are people who are still using the iPad 1 and are happy with it. Same with the iPad 2.
One doesn't have to keep waiting, only being wise and prudent as to when to make the move to upgrade.
It is in Apple's best interest to perpetuate the scenario that you are endorsing... but not in consumers' best interest.
I believe that you are conveying your thoughts correctly. It's your logic that you might want to reconsider.
You're claiming that the iPad Air is so wonderful that iPad 4 owners should definitely upgrade because the Air is going to last until the next generation. Current iPad 4 owners are doing just fine (even better if they're still at 6.1.x) and will continue to do fine until the iPad 6 is out. The iPad 4 is "lasting" through the Air generation.
I'm absolutely delighted to be owning a 64GB iPad 4 running iOS 6.1.3. If someone offered a straight up trade to a 64GB Air running iOS 7.x, I'd decline. I'm waiting to see what Apple offers after the Air and I'll make a decision when that device is actually shipping.
He made NO such claim (that current iPad 4 owners should definitely upgrade). He ONLY explained his position.
Who made YOU "THEE Air is NOT a worthy Upgrade from the '4'"?
Man dude....you're the only one defending the '4' to it's death. Who cares? I've got both, objectively and subjectively the Air is faster, lighter, thinner, and the epitome of today's tablet computing experience. Period. Now....as far as iOS 7 is concerned....it's an infant. A baby. Brand new interface without our initial pure 'point' update yet. It'll get there----as Apple knows what it's doing, unlike many arm chair speculators in this arena. It's their bread n butter, iOS. It's the reason they are where they are and in 2014...this year, Apple may match or exceed "PURE" computing products sold vs. Microsoft. Pretty amazing when you think back to the 90s.
Hold out all you want on your RAM. I'm getting along just fine and consider myself a power user of iPads. We use them every day, many evenings (business) and we've got 4 A7 products now in house. Two iPad rMinis (wife and son for Christmas), my Air and my 5s. Anyone dismissing the accomplishments Apple's engineering team did with the A7 is ignorant. Whether trading out of the 4 to the Air is a smart move or not---only YOU can decide that. It is everything Apple says it is....nothing less, nothing more. I love the iPad 4 as well----we use them often and they're rock solid. But we are now mainly using them as audio and MIDI playback units. All on iOS 6, still----with the exception of one for testing iOS7 and our most used apps. It's almost there as we wait for a single developer to optimize their DAW to iOS 7....
Didn't mean to write so much.....but 'my dad can beat up your dad'??? How old are you?
