i was curious if anyone uses the iPad 4 as their main device today. Do you find it to perform well on iOS 10? What do you use it for? Is it your gaming deavice, a productivity device for work or school, or a media consumption device to just watch your movies or listen to music. Very curious to hear people's experiences.

My wife uses an iPad 4 exclusively, for internet, email, some lightweight office work and movies. The device still works well. The only complaint I hear from her is that the iPad takes a long time to fully charge.

The iPad 4 also takes a long time to discharge despite almost 4 years worth of battery wear. It's got longer battery life compared to my iPad Air and iPad Pro 9.7.

I don't use mine any more, but my younger daughter uses it all the time. I haven't yet upgraded it to iOS 10, though.

I quite loved the old design though, I thought they were such high quality feeling the weight balance was great and it felt expensive.
I totally agree. The shape and heft exude quality.

True, mine is now four full years old and the battery is still going strong.

The battery life help make it one of 3 classic iPads Apple ever did, IMO. The other two are the ipad2 64gb and the Air2 128gb.

Notice that neither Pros are on that short list. :)

I used an iPad 4 as my main device until a month ago and although iOS7 was laggy from the beginning (probably due to my really terrible Wi-Fi, bad installation, although restoring did not help so I´m unsure as to whether that´s the cause.) it worked awesomely. What can I criticize about the battery? Same as my new 9.7 iPad Pro with three years and a half of constant daily use. (On iOS 7. I used it only a few months on iOS 6 and as far as I can recall it was really better, but I cannot know for certain as I cannot recall how I used the device.)

I feel like the Pro will go on that list, once they give both models 4gb of ram and a A10X. Gimme gimme gimme

iPad 4 works fine. It's not as fast as a Pro and some iOS 10 features are missing, but it's completely useable.
Do you see Apple cutting off the remaining 32 bit devices with iOS 11, or do you think they will get 1 last update, before being obsoleted in Apple's eyes

My mother uses her "new" iPad (third generation) daily. Social media, web browsing, newspaper reading, photo viewing.

No issues but it seams slow to me

Surprising considering the 3 is known as the slowest iPad by far, I do t think it would be terrible on iOS 9 with a fresh restore.

Knowing Apple history , I don't really know if next year is going to be 64 bit. . See how long they supported IPhone 4S.,IPad 2. Maybe the 5 will get , maybe not, just Apple knows . It has 1GB of RAM, but it has 32 bit architecture. That alone is the reason to kill it. I predict that the 5s and newer will be compatible with iOS 11 and 12 (S iPhones get an extra year) .

The next cut off:64 bit
Next:2GB of RAM

IOS 13 will be the end of the road for IPhone 6
IOS 14 will require 2GB of Ram or higher (Air 2 included !)

I'll gladly trade that premium feel for smaller, thinner, and lighter in a tablet.

For a phone though, I'd actually like it to be a little heavier to feel more expensive.

Totally agree w/ Nolander above, been using my iP4 since day 1 when it intro'd, several hours a day on iOS10, mainly web browsing, news/magazine & photo album usage, it's my daily reliable friend & also used when traveling.

I tried the iPP 12.9, found it too big & now use an iPP 9.7 for the sofa/bed etc., as I appreciate the newer features & liter weight when reclining.

Just gave my ipad4 to a friend when hers died. It is still a great iPad, hardly notice any difference in speed or battery life compared with Air2 and iPad Pro, though it is still on iOS 9.

Aside from being super slow and crashing apps, I use mine a lot. I'm still generally happy with it. Just wish I hadn't updated it past iOS 8.

Really I have found iOS 8 to be the worst version by far. iOS 9 and 10 are far more optimized. As for your app crashes, have you tried a restore and setting it up as new without restoring a backup. I find that a lot of people just click update in settings for years and then all the old "cruft" from the old versions gets packed in and can cause random slowdown and crashes down the road.

You and a few others keep saying ios 8 was bad (especially for the older iPads), but I'm coming around to the idea that it simply is not true.

I'm going to recommend to my sister, who has a 3, to stay on iOS 8.x and not go to iOS 9.3.5

Imho, the iPad 3 shouldn't have been updated past iOS 6. I reckon iOS 7 is still acceptable but it's considerably less snappy than iOS 6.

My personal experience with the iPad 3 is the same as gobikerider's. For me, iOS 9 ran better than iOS 8 (at the very least, iOS 9 greatly minimized the keyboard lag). I've used iOS 8 and 9 on the iPad 3, 4 and Air, and my experience is iOS 9 ran better than iOS 8 on all three models.

Agreed that ios6 was the best choice... ios7 slowed it down some, but ios8, even more.

Im on the latest iOS 10... Use iPad mostly on TD-Trader app... Trade and Watch CNBC all day... No issues . Watch youtube, message and FaceTime with no issues... NONE... Will be buying IPP V2 next year...
