im thinking I want to stay thin and light this generation. May be Smart Cover and a decal girl back skin. And maybe a sleeve for when I bring it out

Gonna wait a little bit as there may be some cases that incorporate the pencil

I’m going with an otterbox defender case for mine. Hopefully the Apple Pencil will work ok with it.

For my current IPP 12.9, I have a neoprene zip sleeve for taking to work...other than that I use it naked (the IPP not me!).

I’m hoping to get the mini 5 next week. I may spring for a cheap case in stock on amazon until I see exactly what I want.

Gonna try my mini 4 case while waiting to see what comes out that’s designed for the 5.

yeah i wonder what effect it would have covering up the mic
Just use a small brad nail and poke a hole. 😀

As for when I get the Mini 5, I'm going with a skin on the back and using my existing smart cover for the front. I love the super thin and light combo.

yeah my plan as well, where do you get your skins from ?

I'm a bit of an odd duck when it comes to that. I find nothing works better and inexpensive than clear Contact paper. create a paper template, trace, cut it out and apply.

I don’t think the volume buttons are different? Maybe slightly wider but not longer? Ever so slightly - not case breaking though in my opinion.

Anyone else?

Is the rear microphone hole being covered with the old cases an issue if you never use it for facetime or video recording? I'm assuming no?

I always get this brand because it’s the closest thing I’ve found to Apple’s old smart cases. This listing says it’s for a Mini 4 but the mic hole is centered and no reviews yet. Maybe this is for the 5? They have another listing for the 4 which has correct pictures (mic by camera) and plenty of reviews so maybe the link below still needs updated wording but the product is for the 5. If I ever order the iPad I guess I’ll bug the seller to clarify. The link address says Mini 5 too.

I’ll get the sky-Blue and white Smart Cover and back case (Apple Branded) and then drill a tiny hole in the back for the microphone.
I really wish Apple would release a bunch of new colored back cases and smart covers for all their iPads.
I like the Papaya color but it sucks it doesn’t have a back case for more protection.

Kallum.

The rear microphone was moved to the top center.

Yeah that was my point, I have a 4 case without that center hole, so then the question would be -- what usages are you losing if you keep the old case without the hole in the proper spot?

Yeah I agree that looks like a case for the 5. It says only 10 left, maybe after that they'll relist it as a 5 (or a 4/5) case. I saved it for later to look again after I buy! I want to wait a few weeks to see if any Trade In specials come around for the 4 (Best Buy, I'm look at you!)
