Have you used a 16:9 tablet? I have. It's fine for horizontal use, but awkward when held vertically. What exactly is a "normal" aspect ratio, anyway? Can you point me to an industry standard link that defines what "normal" is?

IMO 16:9 is a pretty good ratio for tablets - I own one, and when it's horizontal it's perfect for movies (where the iPad has to have letterbox bars) whilst the vertical orientation is perfect for books & PDFs, as the 16:9 ratio is more the shape of a book than the 4:3.

It's about dang time. The current iPad looks terrible. It's looked the freakin' same for years.

Now how about changing the operating system? Apple employees must take 2 hour lunch breaks and do a lot of online shopping during work. I swear.

I wonder if they will stretch it, like the iPhone 5...

Just wondering. What reason do you have both a regular sized and a mini for? I just can't justify owning both, but would love an excuse to do so. Lol. :p
When it comes to tablets, for me it's like ones wardrobe, nice to have choices. I could do with just one, but I would be limiting myself by the compromises required in choosing one over the other. Like any other product, even though these are both iPads, there is quite a difference in the two.

For relaxing surfing the web, nothing beats the larger full size iPad.
For casual "grab and go" when leaving the house, the iPad Mini fits in a book bag, my messenger bag or backpack (within it's sleeve) so easily.

It's the same reason I always have at least a few Mac Laptops at any given time. Like my MBP, MBPr, MBA for example. I do a tremendous amount of work on a computer so variety is nice. A good portion of my engineering work requires the resources of my fully loaded MBP's, and other times I'm just doing light work so an MBA is more than adequate.

The one you see on every screen everywhere all the time (except for the iPad).

Sounds like you'd be happier with a Windows 8 tablet, and aren't really the target audience for an iPad. Good thing we have choice!

Could be. I've been thinking that Android is the best phone OS, but that Win8 is likely the best OS for a tablet. I'm eager to see additional tablets released with Windows 8.

I had the Thinkpad Tablet 2 for a month, and I found it pretty awful for websites, PDFs, and books. It's really awkward holding vertically. Yeah, there are bars when watching movies, but I do more than just watch movies on my tablet.

And luckily Apple hasn't gone that route yet.

I'd much rather use Android for a tablet than Windows 8, given the choice between the two. Windows 8 with regular apps designed for a desktop interface are terrible, IMO. I really like Windows 8 on the desktop/laptop, but ironically I like it least on a tablet.

Great! It could definitely do with being lighter. The leap in weight from the iPad 2 to the 3 was so tiny, but it really becomes noticeable after a while.

I Can Tell The Speed Difference Between iPad 3 & iPad 4 a Lot

Yes, this is what the Apple marketing Dept. brainwashed you with.
There is no noticeable difference between iPad 3 and 4 performance.
It's a very noticeable difference to me. The 4 is way faster that I could tell immediately after using a 3 for 7 months. And it has the lightning connector which I much prefer. Plus it's available in the 128GB size which is important to me.

I have felt the iPad was too heavy from day 1. Using the mini confirmed this fact. Though at the time every Apple fanboy wanted to attack me for challenging their perfect product, ha!

No, it´s not very noticeable. You have to really search for the speed differences. There´s countless reviews out there that show it and people who owned it said the same thing. You seem to want to fool yourself with that. It can be a bit faster when you browse the web (faster WiFi) or in some very specific games, but that´s certainly not true for everything and it´s also not making a difference at all in your everyday experience. It even has the same amount of RAM. The only thing I agree with is your 128GB comment, that one is definately a plus if you need it, but that got added later, that size wasn´t available when they had introduced the iPad 4.

Everything else is just basically the same. That´s also the reason why many people skipped the iPad 4 completely, because it isn´t worth it if you´re OK with up to 64GB and you own an iPad 3 already.

An SD card slot. A normal aspect ratio instead of the "I Love Lucy" style old school black-and-white-TV aspect ratio. A modern OS. USB host capabilities. USB 3 output. HDMI output. HDMI input. An IR blaster. A Wacomm-style touch screen with variable pressure sensitivity. Enough storage so you can put your entire music and video collection on the device. A half-decent camera.

Do you want me to go on?

Mostly on the same page, I saw a quote about Apples "no stylus needed" it would not be needed it would be an option, something I know I like. And Wacom with pressure sensitivity would be perfect. These are some of the reasons I am just looking at the Surface Pro.

Wow - a rumor nowadays counts as proof? Especially as thin as that one...

Just for the records: Tim Cook phrased it "we’re working on something really great for later next year".

And quite some people interpret this in a way that Apple may not necessarily introduce an updated MacPro as it is known today (i.e. latest server CPU/chipset combo from Intel in a big box with room for expansion and easy access to drives etc.). It may not even keep the name...

Point is, Apple can chew gum and walk at the same time. They're working on the new Mac Pro, Cook said they are. But they know the big money isn't in the pro market anymore. If only the zealots on here campaigning for the Mac Pro, that they'll likely never to buy, can cool it and stop bringing it up in threads about iOS devices.

Or, and this doesn't pertain to you,: shut the hell up about the Mac Pro in unrelated threads, you complainers.

Eww.

Despite how some apps for iPad have revamped interfaces to take advantage of the screen real estate, iPad still feels like a big iPhone to me.

There is something to be said for what Microsoft is attempting with Windows 8. Do we really need full on OSX on the iPad? Not really for most people, but it needs something more. Home screens with app icons is not it.

Really, some of the later features to OSX really should be on the iPad to clean it up.

Bring Mission Control and Launch pad over and get rid of the 10 home screens of apps to scroll through...put spot light front and center... give it a file system... something between IOS as it is and the desktop OSX would be good for the iPad. A file system would make it better suited as a productivity device.

Yes, because the majority of people can afford to buy all those devices for convenience sake....

which they can't. I see your point though, but most people don't have the money to just snatch up a device at $500. Companies know this, and it's pushing everyone to be more innovative and to try and deliver the best experience they can on a device. I give kudos to Samsung. They have have started off copy catting, but now they're really innovating and definitely outshining Apple in phones and tablets. It's just a shame the Android market is such a crap fest.... especially for tablet apps.

Look at the variety of sizes samsung offers in tablets/phablets. Apple only brought a third size out because they kind of had to.

Uh-oh, what are people going to do?

Apple using Samsung for the A7X chip?

Seeing how Samsung is hated by many, I guess no one's gonna buy it.

The Surface is pretty close to what I was hoping the iPad would be. I was sorely disappointed when I found out it was nothing but a big iPod Touch and wouldn't run regular software because it used a dumbed-down cellphone OS.

The "black and white TV" aspect ratio sealed the deal. No thanks.

Making something thinner is not innovating.

No. It's not. Especially when it comes at the cost of battery life...

It's just aesthetics for marketing hype, not innovation.

Better thicker with more power!

How about a mere 15% thicker with *double* the battery life?

I'd take that, for sure, in an iPad.

I found the iPod Touch 5G too thin and long--as if it were going to fall out of my hand. I also had a hard time getting used to the much taller screen-- certain apps looked like they came from a hall of mirrors. Only had it a few days, however, so I was probably having a knee-jerk reaction to the contrast with an iPhone 4 with case.

Tempting, but I would rather have more portability with one of those NewTrent battery packs available to charge it when out and about.

Even at 15% thicker and heavier, it's that much heavier and less portable, to me at least.

I Enjoy Being Brainwashed By Phil's RDF

I perceive a significant difference in speed when switching apps, which I do a lot. Just because a bunch of reviewers say its not that much faster doesn't make it true. I say it's a LOT faster across the board doing all sorts of things. Just bought the 128GB model to replace my 64. But I must admit to enjoying buying every single new retina iPad and iPhone maxed out that comes out. I'm a sucker for Phil Schiller's RDF. :p  ;)

Even though it will get a less power hungry chip, I just don't hope they cut the battery so much that the actual usage time will go down. They should look to improve overall batterytime in all their devices.

Yeah because the Samsung haters aren't buying Apple products right now....

I agree. They have been selling this same design for like 12 months!

The need for innovation is why I also believe the name is changing. I saw this in another thread (I may have posted it), but the name is now Apple Galaxy Nexus Droid Space One Supermax Tablet 42. This change will allow Apple to compete with the innovative naming strategies used by all of their competitors. Please note: the 42 is obviously a fixed part of the name. Next years model will be Apple Galaxy Nexus Droid Space One Supermax Tablet 42 II.

Exciting times.

Weird how you are apparently the only person on earth that felt that way. I bet Microsoft wishes there were a lot more of you.

It looks good however I am likely to wait for version two. I do not tend to purchase the first version of anything. It fits in with what I am looking for, that wacom with pressure sensitivity is nice along with the standards of flash (I still use it until websites knock it off and move to something else) and a full OS which can also be its great weakness along with its strongest point. One does not have to fiddle much with an IOS device while the Sureface Pro I would have to do all that standard Windows stuff, not a huge deal, just depends what works best.
