But realistically what can they do to improve on the iPad 4?

The only technology advancement in the near future appears to be the switch to IGZO. That sounds like it could help achieve near-24 hours of battery life. I don't see that sort of thing happening before 12 months from now. I mean what would an iPad 5 in the spring even improve on?

Ummmm....redesign the entire appearance?

any informations about the processor architecture
A quad-core could be an A6X instead of a A15 based CPU and if I'm not mistaken, the dual-cores A15 are more efficient than the quad-core A9
The A15 is more efficient in the sense that it delivers more performance per MHz. It is not yet clear whether A15 designs will deliver more performance per watt at the power envelopes found in phones and tablets. The A15 was originally designed for low power servers, not mobile devices, which means it must be heavily modified for use in phones and small tablets. I doubt a straight A15 design built on a 32nm process would deliver much of an improvement in performance over existing solutions in a phone with comparable battery life to the IP5.

Anandtech just tested one of the first dual-core A15 devices (http://www.anandtech.com/show/6422/samsung-chromebook-xe303-review-testing-arms-cortex-a15/7), and found it to use 10.5 watts under load at 1.7GHz. That's about 50% more power than is acceptable in a tablet or phone. It achieved 6 hours of battery life with a 30Wh battery; by comparison, the iPad 2 achieves 10 hours of battery life with a 25Wh battery. [Neither product has a Retina display.] The CPU would have to be underclocked (= significantly less performance) to support a tablet or phone with comparable battery life to the IP5 or iPad Mini, and it is unclear how such an underclocked A15 would compare to existing processors like the A6.

Apple has the resources to develop its own next-generation ARM design for phones and tablets (just as it did with the A6), and many expect it to do just that.

So you want rumours? ;)

Roll on the rumours please...Ipad 5 WHEN?? :D

On Christmas Day!!!! Heh hehhh!
Well I asked santa to deliver me one on Christmas day so you just never know. :p
Those elves better be working their butts off!!! :p

iPad5 = IGZO screen with 3D capability and a non-touch hand gesture sensor. Okay apart from IGZO the other options may be some time away from making it to iPad. However I seriously think Apple should consider a hand gesture sensor. Say if you're viewing a car manual while working on your car or viewing a recipe while cooking, the last thing you want to do is touch the screen with greasy hands. A hand gesture sensor would allow you to flip pages etc. Now that would be cool ... and ensure your iPad stays clean!!

I mean first we loved 'touch screen' interaction, then 'voice control' (of sorts) interaction with Siri, so I'm thinking the next big 'interaction' thing would be hand gestures. ?????
Oh, and whatever happened to 3D cameras????? Just remembered there was a smart phone out there that introduced this. Perhaps a 3D cam will eventually make it to iPhone and iPad. ????
And getting back on the rumour mill, whatever happened to the one that said 'pico projectors' or something similar would be built in to iDevices? I guess they'd use a lot of power so unless battery life can be doubled or even tripled then this might make it to say ..... the iPad 15. :p

I'm pretty sure the next iPad will be released a year from now and it won't come with 24-hour battery life. Simply swapping the display to an IGZO panel doesn't achieve that. It might add a couple of hours, but I can see Apple rather including a thinner / lighter battery and losing that extra battery life in exchange for a lighter iPad.

Im sure they will take some feature that has been available, and they'll reintroduce it as a new "magical" feature.

I could see thinner. New screen manufacturer: users don't care :). 1080p FaceTime: users don't care and bandwidth won't transmit the the full stream. A similar back: yes, I could see that, and it'd be nice. 8mp camera: who cares. NFC: no freakin way :). 16:9 or 3D: no freakin FREAKIN way :)

None of those sound interesting other than thinness. I think the next big wave of improvement will be a 24 hour battery life thanks to IGZO.

I would like a lighter Ipad 5 .. If Apple can get it down to 1 lb (from 1.44 lb now), it would be an excellent upgrade.

But the IGZO panel also eliminate one of the two LED backlight. but my bet is that they will reduce the size of the battery instead of making the Ipad running longer.. It will be cheaper to manufacture as well as lighter..

I am still thinking of something stupid that apple will name it iPad 3 on March 2013. It will be the same joke as iPhone when they name the 6th generation of iPhone, iPhone 5. Maybe iPad will be the same. 3rd design of iPad (which I hope that will happen). New design, new hardware specs. New processor will be unlikely to happen I think. In addition, maybe they will replace the existing iPad 2 with iPad 3 and the 4th generation of iPad with iPad 3 with Retina Display. I know it sounds stupid but have a strange feeling about this.:D:D

I'd bet on a revised form factor in March. It needs to be thinner and lighter. Increased competition and the pace of technological development in general is going to force Apple to update their products more frequently.

I'd expect an iPad 5 a year from now. New design with some sort of gimmick that isn't performance related...Fingerprint scanner maybe? If I could replace my passwords with a fingerprint scanner that works WELL then I would bite and get an iPad 5 or even an iPhone. I hate HATE entering and remembering passwords...

I feel like the iPad will need a redesign next time round.

It just weighs too much for me personally. I love the iPad 3 but it feels too bulky now. Would also love the borders to be reduced if possible.

Yes. iPad 5 will be a beast if weight and thickness are reduced 20% (like iPhone 5), and side bezels slimmed down like Mini.

Since it was such a minor update, Android will catch up and it makes sense to go back to the usual release schedule. Plus it was like when the 4S was released there was talk of them testing a Iphone 5.
Roll on the rumours please...Ipad 5 WHEN?? :D

Iphone 4s to iphone 5 was an entire year..Plus ipad is WAY ahead in benchmarks...I'm thinking next fall.

iPad 5
Design matching the iPad Mini
IGZO display
Thinner and lighter
A7X
Stereo speakers
Haptic feedback
Wacom Style digitizer (Apple Stylus sold as a separate accessory) supporting pressure sensor and angle of the pen.

Nope..

They will have leaked half the Ipad rumours by the time the years out..has to be March 2013.

And then they are going to release the ipad 6 in november 2013 right? You are clearly clueless.

iPhone release schedules were June-June-July-October-September.
Ipad release schedules were April-March-March-November.

Look a pattern (NOT!). OP is an idiot.

No where did I say that??

I said they will release Ipad 5 in March 2013 (yes only one Ipad in the whole of 2013) with Ipad 3/4 being a one off with mini in this year.

After March, they revert back to a one year cycle.

i doubt they're going to release another ipad...if they do releases for the same line so frequently, it's going to hinder their sales and bring down the hype that causes the sales boost. Technology is a competitive area and releasing the best of the time is definitely strived for, but if supply/demand/timing isn't coordinated, it will only stunt their goals.

The 4 was such a minor bump to keep up with the specs of the Androids and there was really no-rebranding. It was meant more to keep the current line fresh for the holiday sales season.

March will come with the same A6X since its more than powerful enough right now and it will be at least 6 months until the apps catch up, but the iPad 5 will be much thinner and lighter and will run cooler - thereby addressing the current issues. It will be a significant upgrade on form factor but not necessarily performance.

I think they only penned in the 4 as it made sense to roll out the lightning connector as the Mini would make the Ipad 2 look old with the old connector

I think you nailed it there. I highly doubt the ipad4 refresh would have happened if it wasn't for the new connector. They want uniformity on their products, and it would kinda suck if they kept selling ipads with the old connector for another 10+ months while ipad mini and iphone5 and all the new gadgets would use lightning.

I'd be SHOCKED if the current iPad isn't updated to teh new form factor by the summer

I think it's going to be this:

big iPad/all mac laptop lines - refreshed in may before summer

ipad Mini/Phone/iPod/iMac - Refreshed before christmas

Mac Pro - Never :(

actually i take this back, mac laptop lines are probably heavily dependent on Intel

That's just stupid... there is a clear advantage to moving the iPad release date to the end of the year (right before the holidays). But only a hindrance to move it to early Spring, that being, it causes everyone to "hold off" on their iPad purchase over Xmas for the Spring update.

Prepare to be shocked then...

one of the major reasons i disagree is because apple NEEDS a product in the spring

i doubt it's the appletv, that's a much longer shot than a new full sized ipad

----------

not to mention the full size ipad at 500 is NOT a holiday gift target. i think it's much more important for Apple to have the full sized ipad for the all important back to school season

yup, the iPad NEEDS a major refresh early next year.

Finally there is some strong competition coming on hard in the tablet market with Nexus 10 and Microsoft Surface - and Apple needs to take the iPad to the next level - fast.

Not really the hardware is solid enough it's the os which needs revamping
