I have a weird situation. My original iPad home button was sticking a little so I ended up getting Applecare to send me an advanced replacement. So I receive my replacement and ship back my original, everything is good. But yesterday I have a FedEx doortag for a missed shipment and come to find out it's from Apple. I called them and they have no record of a shipment to me? I just received it and it's my original iPad (stated it was resolved on reproducible)? But WTF? And the credit card authorization they apply until they receive the original has also been released. Anyone ever heard of this?

When I look up my serial under support I get.

We're sorry, but this is a serial number for a product that has been replaced. Please check your information and re-enter your serial number. If your information is correct, you may need to contact us.

Your post is kind of confusing: "I called them and they have no record of a shipment to me? I just received it and it's my original iPad"

If they have no record of a shipment to you how could you have received it back? Either they looked at it or did not. Did you call AppleCare?

Normally Advance Replacement works like this:

You send them your bum product, they simultaneously send you a replacement. They take your CC as deposit in case you do not send your bum product back or your bum product was received and found not to be defective, i.e., they could not reproduce the problem you stated it had. In these two cases they will charge your CC.

So I would recommend calling Apple and seeing what is up. I don't think anyone here can help you at this point.

Send them an email saying that you received an extra iPad by mistake and ask them to send you return shipping documents. If they don't respond, or don't provide you with the ability to easily return the product, then keep it. At the very least, make some kind of attempt to return it.

I agree. Make a good-faith effort to return it. If they won't let you return it, then keep it with a clean conscience.

I don't know how that's confusing since I stated how I did that in my post. I originally did the simultaneous exchange and a few days later my original showed up as well. And yes AppleCare found no shipment to me when I called.

I understood your post until I came to this line, which took some work to process clearly in my brain.

But I eventually figured it out.

As for your problem, just call Applecare (I know you did and they say they didn't send you a package) and ask them if the original case number has been closed and if it shows they received your defective unit. I would clearly inform them you received your replacement and believe they accidentally sent back the defective unit as well. Ask them if they can send another label and mail it back.

If they tell you the record is closed and you will not be charged for the second iPad and they express no interest in getting back the broken one, I guess keep it, take it apart and try to fix the home button issue yourself.

Is the replacement iPad a refurbished unit? I am sending my 3G in because of major batter issues. I called a few stores but everyone is out of stock. I talked to someone from Apple and they agreed to send me a replacement. Is it new in box? They told me to take out my micro-sim and keep all accessories.

The original advance replacement I got was new. I think I found out how to tell though if it's new under Settings -> About you'll see the MC...LL for the model number the refurbs show the part number 66-XXXX (for the Wi-Fi models at least).

Yeah... and then once they figure out their error his credit card will be automatically charged for that free ipad.

Did they ship you a new unit for the Advanced replacement or a refurb?

So I finally got some time to call yesterday and the rep and her manager had never heard of this happening before. So after 40 minutes on the phone she took my info and stated a replacement rep would call me sometime this week. I was able to get a purchase discount code for my troubles though. :)

Recent history shows that you should make a reasonable attempt to return it... and that doesn't mean placing one call to some random Apple support rep. You may get an angry email from Mr. Jobs if you play that game! :)

Probably more than an angry email, Steve will send his storm troopers to kick down your door and take it back
