Can't pickup if there's no inventory to get.
What Apple is really saying is they think this won't be like the iPhone 6. No need to worry about crazy lines or sell outs necessitating pre-orders. You'll be able to walk in and get one.
To me it looks like the same image spanned across the two devices to make it look like two different wallpapers. Even so, why is the gradient so different in both of them? Whoever edited those images could've used the same process for both photos. It's just interesting that they're so different, especially when one of the biggest complains about the Mini is the screen/gamut.
I should be able to schedule a pickup. But yeah I agree, I think I'm just going to wait to go in store to pick it up. I know these aren't nearly as popular as the phones, and its a tablet and I don't need it the second it comes out
EDIT: If you opt for the engraving option you can do store pickup, at least to my local store. It is 2 weeks though, and I don't really want it engraved. Just a heads up to everyone
I decided to get the Air 2. I knew the Air 2 would get more love this time around, but was hoping for at least the A8 and the thinner profile in the Mini 3. I really want Touch ID since we have complex password requirements at the office now, but if I'm going to take the financial hit for selling my year-old "mini 2" for 50% of what I paid for it, I couldn't justify just getting Touch ID.
My guess is the mini will get the A8 (when it's not in short supply due to iPhone demand) and the current mini 3 is a placeholder for that. My guess is Apple isn't expecting many people to choose this model right now.
I was going to throw my money at a Mac Mini but that's not gonna happen based on what they released....
Instead I think I'm going for an iPad Air 2.
Not that I really feel the need to upgrade from my current iPad Air, but my wife's iPad3 16GB has 0kb free space, mostly because of pictures, and is still running iOS6.
May do the old hand-me-down swaparoo so we both get better iPads.

My guess is that they'll show up in stores early next week, maybe even before the pre-orders arrive. You should be able to just walk in and get one. The iPad launches are much more low key since sales have slowed.

Space Grey for me and Gold for my wife. Overall with the touch ID, the Apple SIM, the non reflective coating, the cameras, and beefier A8X I think it is a nice upgrade even from the Air 1.
But if I were Apple I would worry about next year. I think with the Air2 Apple has hit a plateau. I do not think they will be able to do much to make the next model much better.
2-4 days shipping to Southern California. My Wife's birthday is the 21st but I think it will miss it by a day.

My estimated delivery date is 22 - 24 October, so essentially middle to end of next week for a 128Gb Wifi iPad Air 2.
It will be replacing my trusty iPad 3 (which I've already sold to my sister
) and I can't wait to get something that is faster and a lot lighter in the hand - isn't the iPad 3 the heaviest of the breed as it came in at 51g more than the iPad 2 thanks to the retina screen and bigger battery - the only time an iPad has got thicker and heavier between generations.
