Only 1 Wi-Fi + Cellular model (or rather 3 if you count the different colors) since it allows you to choose whatever carrier you want at any time. I am surprised Apple didn't make a big deal about this at the event.

"The new Apple SIM is preinstalled on iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular models. The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip."

I know that. I'm referring to the old iPad Air, which did not have Apple SIM.

I'm not sure why Apple even decided to keep selling the mini 2. It makes the mini 3 look like a terrible buy.

There were rumors that the iPad mini wouldn't be updated at all this time. It wouldn't surprise me if there's a spring iPad event, where the "iPad Plus" is announced, along with a real iPad mini update (laminated screen, A8, improved cameras).

Well, sure glad we sold off all our ipads a week ago in anticipation of new upgraded minis. Guess we'll be going without for a year.

It'll be interesting to see if we still feel locked into the Apple ecosystem by then, or if we'll start honestly evaluating other alternatives.

This lack of a mini update was an unbelievably poor idea.

The lack of RAM coupled with the 64-bit processor and Safari tabs/other apps constantly reloading is a well documented issue.

Actually, its just Safari because I have yet to see anyone who can cite an app other than Safari that had issues with only 1GB of RAM.

If this happens I feel so sorry for those of you who are buying the iPad Air 2 & iPad Mini 3. This exact situation happened with the iPad 3rd Generation & 4th Generation...

So then there would be what, 7 different iPad models for sale simultaneously?

What a mess.

Selling all your iPads based on nothing more than rumours and speculation from the Internet, and putting yourself at a loss because of that, was an unbelievably poor idea!

Agreed would look very Samsung-esque.
Like many others I do not see the innovation nor value for money with these new announcements. If I were to buy an ipad it would be the original ipad air or the ipad air 2.

Possibly. I'd hope they'd drop the original mini and maybe the iPad mini 2. My guess is they're still selling the original mini to clear out old stock. The A5 really needs to go.

This wouldn't be so bad:
iPad Plus ($599+)
iPad Air 2 ($499+)
iPad Air ($399+)
iPad mini 4 ($399+)
iPad mini 3 ($299+)

Why would anyone pre order this right now?

Wait for tear down and geek bench scores to officially confirm the 2GB of RAM. I sold my iPad Air a couple weeks ago for this version, if this isn't 2GB RAM I will GLADLY go without an iPad till next year

Can't deal with another iPad of constant safari tab refreshes. No software magic in the world can mask a pathetic 1gb of ram

They did update it. They gave us Touch ID and gold option for the same price.

They also kept the old model in 16 and 32 GB configs for cheaper.

Apple does retail the best

This is one thing I have to say Apple does the best, the online retail experience. A new product was announced yesterday, and ready to order today with a 2 - 3 day wait for shipping. Yes sometimes a popular item might slip on delivery and take a few weeks after the initial burst of pre-sales, but ultimately you can order an item on the date that Apple says its available for order. Apple said the iPad Air 2 and Mini 3 are available for preorder today, and you can order today.

Look at Google now. They say the Nexus 9 is available for pre-order today, well today is half over and you still can't order the Nexus 9. Nexus 6 is ready for pre-sale late October, but there is no reason for Google not to be able to lock down a firm release date at this point. There is also no reason to not have pre-sales enabled for any product at this point even if the actual shipping of the new product is tentative. What is the difference of enabling presales 12 midnight as opposed to what, 2 or 3 pm in the afternoon?

As having experienced Google's online retail fiascos in the past (ordering the Nexus 4 through Google was a nightmare), I have to say that Apple has figured this part of their business model out long ago. Also for Google it's inexcusable for them to not offer a better online retail experience considering the size and profitability of Google, and the fact they dominate other web technology and services so well.

If Google wants to be a hardware retailer then they are going to have to do a far better job than what they are doing. You can't act like an amateur if you want to jump in the ring with other big online retail pros like Apple and Amazon.

Use your Discover Card and Discover Deals to get 10% when purchasing from Apple directly.

(Discover has two shopping portals: ShopDiscover and Discover Deals. Discover Deals does not exclude preorders in the fine print.)

Thanks for this! I ordered with ShopDiscover and saw that pre-order disclaimer. Now that you posted that they have another site, I cancelled that order and used Discover Deals. Why the hell would they have 2 sites? It's confusing. I hope I get the extra 5%. 10% would cover NY taxes. and then some.

Make that an only semi-functional touch id. and at a hundred dollar premium.

If I wanted a cheaper last years iPad, I'd get on ebay and buy one.

Considering what those ipads would be worth next year, I've minimized my loss.

And considering what I won't be losing on another years worth of two dozen ipads rapid depreciation, I'm doing great.

...especially since I'm still not sure the productivity increase was worth the expense.

What will it take to get me to purchase again...

I want NFC/applepay/applewatch on a retina mini. I do not want an iPhone, as I have an iPad unlimited data plan (and use VOIP).

On top of that, Ming-Chi Kuo was predicting only a minor update for the mini. A lot of us though Kuo was wrong and that there would at least be an A8 added to the Mini 3, but that turned out not to be the case.

Not sure why people are so obsessed with iDevices having more ram. Its obviously not that important as far as improving performance so why worry. Does it work? Yes, Is it fast? yes, Does it allow you to perform all functions you expect to perform? yes.. Now why the hell is ram so important??? lol.. Do these people even understand what ram does? Sheesh

I see, you're one of those guys where once Apple adds more ram, it's ''the greatest thing since sliced bread''.
