It seems quite obvious that the GPU benchmark is resolution dependent but not an off-screen rendering test. Let's not forget that the iPad 3rd generation had the resolution quadrupled.

Right. I don't see anything blatantly odd in the graphics results. iPad 5,4 is consistently faster than iPad Air 1.

The resolution is not enough to knock the score down that much.

Likely it's just a bug from running software that's totally untested on A8X.

If these CPU scores are what apple will advertise "50%" improvement, then the GPU is gonna blow everything including Broadwell out of the water in graphics.

I don't think people understand how impressive this is. Apple has taken 2 years to do what Intel has taken 35 to do. And now they are surpassing Intel (thank god).

Performance per watt definitely. Raw performance unlikely.

2d and 3d perf is all wonky. I wouldn't worry too much about it tho, it looks like Apple has made something pretty amazing.

I'm very interested in what GPU benchmarks say, as this is way more than advertised CPU.

This thing makes Tegra K1 look like a joke! :)

----------

Sure it is. 4x as many pixels. Again, look at the iPad Air scores.

It's scoring only 20%-40% higher than A7

Apple said 2.5X GPU. That's not even 1.5x. These scores are wrong (period)

Edit: also look at the memory score, it would have to have pcie SSD in it to score that high!

It is listing 2 GB of RAM and a three core processor. One can assume this is the iPad Air 2!

If this is true its indeed great... the iPad Air 2 is going to be a total iPad 2 like device ie. a model with some legs in it.

That also means every other year, is when you should really buy your iPads.

iPad 2 - fixes all the 1st gen stuffs
iPad 4 - retina display + performance boost over iPad 2
iPad Air 2 - newer lighter than Air 1 + performance boost over original Air

The iPad 3 and original Air are rather underwhelming releases since they didn't really change the performance much - the 3 is just an A5x, the Air was just a reskin for a newer shell. The poor original iPad suffered an early demise much like the original iPhone.

I'm still going to wait for a Black Friday kinda deal myself though. By then it should be confirmed for sure.

Very interesting...

Apple claims the A8X is 40% faster than the Air's A7. All things being equal, a 3rd core would add 50% better CPU performance over a dual core. Add in the efficiencies from the A8 over the A7 (25%) I'm not sure how the A8X is only quicker 40% than the A7. Both enhancements combined should be closer to 80% increase in performance.

It is possible that Apple added the core but reduced clock speeds over the A7 to lower power consumption. After all the Air2 does have a smaller size battery yet same battery life as an Air. The reduced clock speed could account for the delta in performance gains one would expect from an additional core. Apple has done something similar before. Not exactly the same, but consider the Haswell upgrade for MBAs. Better chip but lower clock speeds for marginal performance difference but killer energy efficiency. It would also be a great explanation as to where the extra transistors are used for, but that's looking like its for a hex core GPU at this point.

With all that being said, I hope this is true. I will keep my preorder in if it is indeed a triple core.

It's already going to beat Core M. I mean it already has look at the score!

edit: I have to remember to take my own advice and view these benchmarks skeptically. There are several glaring oddities ESPECIALLY 2d/3d

----------

So assuming these benchmarks are accurate more or less and the iPad is really this fast, how does Qualcomm even compete with this?

Nvidia can't compete on 28nm. Intel can't compete (lol). Samsung can't compete even on 20nm w Exynos 5433.

At this point android is losing the spec war bad in tablet. And x86 tablets aren't going to be any faster.

Intel is so slow to advance their architecture that apple has caught up to them and passed them in perf/w. Intel has a great process with 14nm but it's not mature and their architecture is good but like, old.

Could this be for the supposed 12.9" iPad Pro? Maybe in that version, with more room, they'll boost the clock speed somewhat.

Very unlikely Apple would let one of those out into the wild at this early juncture.

The iPad 2 was a huge improvement over the iPad 1, but it didn't have any legs at all. Just because Apple kept selling it for a while doesn't mean it was any good.

I do agree the iPad air 2 with these specs is going to last a while, tho.

According to this site, iPad5,4 is the iPad air 2 cellular.
Looks like it's pretty much confirmed now.

If someone wasn't concerned about the retina display, the iPad 2 until very recently would run most apps just fine. That's plenty good enough for lots of people and probably why people kept on buying it while it remained on sale.

Its nice to see the iPad Air 2 having that sort of potential... you never know, the Air 3 could add a retina HD display, but along with the higher resolution comes the need for more hardware power to drive the display/render the pixels, etc which is the big problem the iPad 3 had. But someone on an Air 2 could be happily chugging along skipping an upgrade or two.

I have an iPad 2 and never saw a need to look for an upgrade until iOS 8 came out myself.

I'm really (really (really)) looking forward to this! Here is the pluses for me:

-3 core A8X CPU: best on the market
-6 core GPU
-2GB of RAM: Will be like the iPad2, keeps getting iOS updates and just doesn't get discontinued ;)
-Anti Glare screen
-Much better camera, both in terms of resolution as well as aperture and slo mo
-TouchID
-Very, very thin and light but still keeps 10 hour battery life
-64GB for the price of 32GB
-Continuity

Last year, I never bought an iPad Air (as a first iPad) due to the lack of RAM (after 2 years of iPads having 1GB, jumping on the 1GB train at the end of a cycle won't end well ;) ). I will gladly buy a 64GB iPad Air 2!

Looks legit. Probably a reviewer testing the device. Thank you apple for this awesome update.

I'm glad the two gigs of RAM have been confirmed, now I can look forward to getting a 64 gig silver iPad air two cellular on Friday

Last year I bought iPad Air just to test it if its for me. I was already disappointed by the lack of TouchID but thought I could give it a try. Eventually, I have returned it and reasoned it that I would rather wait for the new generation that will have the TouchID. I think it was the best decision that I could have made. Not only that I will get 32gb extra storage for free (was going to get 32gb) but I will also get a model that looks like will last me for ages. The 2GB ram and the massive speed of the A8X will certainly keep me happy for at least 3-4 years if not more. :)

Confirmed? Where? This data could be a prototype, a fake,...

Now i understand the slogan "it's been a long way"

Why should I believe this?

is it the code name that has got you thinking it's accurate?

As not knowing anything ( like most people) , this looks rather obscure.
