I am new to the forum and hope I am asking my question in the right place. I have been visiting Macrumors since 2011 and finally decided to make an account on the forums. Anyway, yesterday I picked up a 128gb iPad Air 2 at Target to replace my iPad 3 from March 2012 and I had them price match it to Staples deal of $140 off. So I got it for $559.00. Once I got it home and set it up I noticed that it is running iOS 8.1.2. When I opened the photos app it also asked me if I wanted to sign up for the beta of iCloud Photo Library. I almost had to laugh when it said beta because that was quite a while ago. It must have been sitting on their shelves for quite some time. The performance is awesome and their isn't any lag on it. What I am wondering how is the performance of iOS 9.1 on the air 2? Does it lag or is it still as fast as iOS 8? I have already started putting a bunch of my stuff on it and if I upgrade to 9.1 is it best to do it over the air or connect to iTunes to do it? I just don't want to upgrade and have lag like I do on iOS 9.1 on my iPhone 5s. I would really like to know how everybody else's performance is on the air 2 on iOS 9. Would also like to know if it is better to connect to iTunes to update since it is a full update isn't it?

A8X on Air 2 beats the pulp out of a A7, and it's got double the RAM. I'd be very surprised if there's any lag on the Air 2 iOS 9.1

OTA vs iTunes is identical

Mine arrives Monday :)

Did you also get the Staples deal? I know when I used to update my devices via iTunes the iTunes file was larger than the OTA file size and I thought there was a difference between the two.

No I'm from Canada, no Staples deal here

iTunes file is larger because it loads the whole firmware from scratch

OTA only downloads the changes and applies them to massively reduce file download size. Both methods are identical in the end with no differences.

I just went from Air to Air 2 yesterday and speed difference is staggering. This thing is instant in what ever you do, and no reloading of apps. Multitasking is awesome as well, very handy. I thought the Air was a beast with A7 but it's rather ordinary compared to A8x.

Mine came with 8.4 installed and there was no difference in speed between it and 9.1.

Try going from the iPad 3 to the Air 2. The difference in speed is amazing and the weight of the Air 2. Last night I held the Air 2 for a couple hours straight and was just fine. If I would have been using my iPad 3, my wrists would of started to ache and I would gave up and quit using it. The difference between the A5x and A8x is amazing.

Did you upgrade over the air or with iTunes. I am thinking of using iTunes but am unsure. I plan on syncing to iTunes anyways because I want to put my music library on my iPad Air 2.

I also see you have an iPhone 5s, how is IOS 9 running on yours?

I now realize the difference. I never really looked up before why the file sizes were different but now I know. Thanks for your reply.

I upgraded over the air, as soon as I got home on my cable since it was 1.1GB update. But the iPad was vastly empty and in stock config. I didn't update any apps or install my own until I had upgraded.

The 5S is running very well, no probs at all and 9.1 smoothed out a few animations. The only one that is stuffed is message notifications on the top bar, if you dare try to replay using it you're in for a 10 sec wait for the animations to complete. This is the same on the Air, Air 2 and 5S. I have also read about it on the 6, 6S and plus too.
