Hey everyone,

Recently my iPad Air 3 has been exhibiting some strange behavior. Whenever I reboot it, the first time I plug it in it won't recognize the charger, but every subsequent time it will. It can't be a hardware issue, as if I turn the iPad off and back on with the cable plugged in, it instantly recognizes the charger is plugged in. Has anyone else had this issue, or is it just me?

I don't necessarily think hardware is a factor in this. I've done everything from cleaning out the charging port to switching cables to factory resetting the iPad. This only seems to have started sometime in June, while I got my iPad in May, so I'm guessing it's just some sort of software bug, as this behavior is extremely consistent. Reboot iPad, plug in, iPad doesn't respond, unplug and plug back in, and iPad will instantly respond to the charger every single time until next reboot.

What version of iPadOS is your iPad Air 3 on?

Try plugging the charger into a different outlet. As strange as that may sound, that helped my unknown charging mystery a couple times. Otherwise, maybe a defective charger? Also as posted above, should be an Apple approved lightning cable.

Not a defective charger. I’ve tried 3 chargers bought directly from Apple in different outlets. I’ve also tried with and without a surge protector. I’m just gonna chalk it up to a software issue, as it started around the time I updated to iOS 13.5.1, and the behavior is so so so repeatable that it isn’t random like a hardware issue would be. And like I said earlier, after that one missed plug in happens, it responds to every attempt to charge 100% of the time.

Could it be that usb security feature that Apple introduced back in iOS 11.4.1 I believe?

Update: since my last post, I have updated to the iOS 13.6 grandmaster beta, and the issue doesn’t seem to be happening anymore. If anyone else who sees this thread has this issue, I’d recommend either installing the beta (its the same grandmaster version that will be shipping with the final release), or waiting till the final release. Thanks guys for all your attempts to fix this.
