There’s no SmartCover, only the Smart Folio, which magnetically fastens to the back as well as the from. Very sleek, minimal, and easy install and remove. The only downside is it’s price.

No what Im really for is a *cover* that snaps on like the old school iPads. Im looking for absolute minimum thickness here and dont care about protecting the back - just the screen.

Sadly, smartcovers no longer exist for iPads beyond the 8th gen iPad. That's a reason why I'm not interested in getting the Air or Pro. Thankfully the Mini 4 smartcovers work with the Mini 5. If I needed a "full-size" iPad, I'd happily get the iPad 8th gen... smartcover and smart keyboard covers are available.

As I said, there’s no Smart Cover. The folio really doesn’t add much more thickness though. I’m a minimalist when it comes to cases and covers too, but I’m really happy with the Smart Folio.

You're entitled to your opinion. I have tried the smart folio case. It is nice. But it is not the same as the smartcover. I know it is the "Apple way", but I'm not going to pay MORE for something that is LESS suitable for my needs.

Link? Does the current Pro/Air 4 chassis design provide the requisite magnets along the long edge opposite of the pencil charging side to allow for the attachment of such a cover?

I've never seen a Smart Cover knockoff. Plenty 3rd party magnetic Smart cases/folios though.
