Id say that a MacBook and iPhone combination would be a better choice.
Odd statement... The three devices are not really comparable. For most people, one of iPad and MacBook might be sufficient. However they do serve different needs and purposes.
If you want hand-written note-taking, drawing/sketching, study for a course or do homework for that, an iPad with the right apps works much better. Also, for reading papers, books, news an iPad is superior to a MacBook.
For other media consumption, web-browsing its a tie (also dependent on if it’ll be used on a desk or sofa/bed). Same with light office stuff (a one-page letter every now and then)
If you need the full power of Microsoft office, have large folders and drives to navigate, do any programming/developing or need specialized software (i.e. scientists using MATLAB, Mathematica, Origin; video editors Premier), then you can not get aloNg without a MacBook.
I personally have both. Use the iPad much more often now, but having a Mac is still a must.
