I've finally been able to test this and have confirmed that iPad Air cases aren't fully compatible with the new 2017 iPad.

The volume buttons are shifted slightly and the camera as well.

Can you use it? Yes. My leather iPad Air Smart Case fits the 2017 iPad in a usable fashion, but changing the volume will be a bit weird. The camera hole being shifted slightly looks weird but doesn't seem to affect photos.

Have a look for yourself; I posted photos.

The Targus Versatype 4 in 1 keyboard case for iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro 9.7 fits the new iPad released last week perfectly. All cutouts are aligned perfectly including the camera. I purchased mine today and paired the two with no issues.

Has anyone tested to see if the Smart Cover for the first iPad Air will work with the new iPad (2017)? I still have one of those stashed away.

Works with the $5.99 iPad Air case I bought from Amazon.

The cheaper the case, the more likely it will fit because of lower precision and wider tolerance.:)

And no, the location of the magnets have not changed, despite what some users have claimed.

Please post a link to the red case in the pic.. thanks!

Is there a mute button on 2017 ipad.

Don't think I'll neccesarily like what looks like shifted volume buttons which I love on my air.

They did away with the physical mute / rotation lock button. It's now the same layout as the iPad Air 2 / 9.7" iPad Pro.

Yes it’s hard on the back. Soft on the front.

The iPad (2017) is similar enough to the Air that many cases will fit. The buttons and camera has been moved slightly but most cases with wide openings will fit.

Is this a hard case? Like does it have a hard and unbendable surface?

Thank you very much sir! I am looking for a very good keyboard case for my new Ipad 2017 and the one I found is for Ipad Air. It has a hard case plastic construction but it has a wode opening for the volume buttons. I will purchase it now because you said it is compatible with hard cases :) Thank you!!!

I just ordered the iPad 2018 which has the same dimensions as the 2017 model. I am upgrading from an iPad mini and I always used Apple's smart case. So would the 2017/2018 iPad work with the Ipad Air or Ipad Air 2 smart case? I am thinking about ordering one. I would make a volume button cutout using a razor or knife.

I just got the 2018 iPad, its the same as the 2017 externally and i've actually put it in an iPad air original case, only the volume buttons and the camera have slightly shifted, nothing a knife couldn't sort out.
