iPad Air iPad Air charges slower than energy use

Is it normal that my daughter's 2019 iPad Air charges slower than the energy it requires to run?

In other words: if she uses it while it's charging, the battery level still drops slowly.

It depends on the brick and what app(s) she’s running.

its happened to me before, I can’t remember if it’s because I was using an 5 volt for something that normally uses 12 or because it was an older device multi-tasking rather heavily.

I wouldn't say normal if it’s a daily occurrence but once in a blue moon it’s nbd.

This happened to me on my first gen iPad Pro 12.9. I ended up getting a 30W charging brick with USB-C to lightening and it's been fine since.

I watch a lot of video on very high brightness. I had previously tried the charger that came with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, even that one was no good. My charge would go backwards.

My 2020 iPad Air came with a 20W charger and I believe the higher end iPads can support until 30W or so

Get her a 12W power adapter. That is what the device originally came with.

The 5W brick is really just for iPhones (and slow charging at that). Even the 10-12W bricks that ship with iPads take more than 3 hours for full charge with no usage.

Measured power draw from the wall with a 60W USB-C PD charger:

2017 Pro 12.9: 30W
2017 Pro 10.5: 30W
2019 Air 3: 30W
2019 iPad 7: 15W

Even on the older iPad Pro, I've had no trouble with the 30W. Plus if you get a newer device than you have currently, you won't need a new brick. You'll have USB-C to lightening.
