Personally, I'm somewhat amazed at how many people expect these devices to be rather tough with no protection.
Did nobody break any of the previous generations of iPads?
Are people actually expecting such devices to drop onto a sharp corner or edge and survive without a scratch?
Like my current cell phone and every phone before it, I take my iPad virtually everywhere and I've not once thought "Oooooh, I better not do this or take it there because it might break." Similarly, I don't put it down someplace where it could easily be knocked onto the floor, etc. I've read countless threads here about people simply being careless with their devices. Not saying the OP was careless, but I see a trend and I'm not quite sure how it developed. It's as if people don't value the money they spend on devices, or perhaps there are a lot of people who have their devices bought for them...or perhaps people pay for their things using credit and don't think it costs "real" money to pay for.
I find no fault with the Air's design and I'm not worried about an accidental drop or careless mistake. If I were then I could just get a case for it. There's also AppleCare+ that has provisions for accidental damage.
Yes, accidents have that name for a reason, but the vast majority of accidents happen due to being careless or inattentive. Accidents can be prevented, doesn't matter if it's dropping your iPad or wrecking your car.
So...folks can blame the design of the iPad all they want for the damage that happens as a result of dropping it by accident. That would be like me blaming my car mfr for building a weak car if I accidentally ran it into a wall and it were damaged. Maybe I should've just been more careful and then I wouldn't have hit that wall...
