Just take it in. Apple has been known to take pity on people before and replace them, even if not for free, at out-of-warranty cost.

The worst they can do is say "no". Sorry this happened to you, this has got to suck arse; these things aren't cheap!

My car got hit by an ipad. $2000 bucks damage. OP, what's your insurance company and policy #?

Just go in, tell them how you got the iPad, tell them honestly what happened, and beg. Thing is they don't have to service it, even if you had AppleCare+ as it woud be considered catastrophic damage. It is worth a try. Like someone said, the Geniuses sometimes do take pitty, but to replace it they need a manager's approval, even for OOW replacements, for something this bad.

Most of the time, managers are sympathetic also, just depends.

Just don't be surprised if they say no.

I'm curious to know if the logic board was damaged in any way. I'm sure it was, but you never know.

That really doesn't look THAT bad for the "fall" that you described. I figured it would be in a lot of much smaller pieces.

I am not sure about that. The thing that Apple Care does not cover is 'acts of god', which has a very specific meaning in insurance terms. I made sure I clarified this before I bought the Apple Care. In fact, I also asked the guy in the Apple Store when buying Apple Care what if I scratched the back cover, he said they would not replace it. Then I asked him - what if I scratched the back cover and deliberately broke the glass (outside the store, of course). He said that as per the terms of Apple Care, they would have to replace it. What the OP has experienced is an accident. It could be argued that he was careless, but it was an accident nevertheless and as such, if he had Apple Care, Apple would be obligated to replace it (for a minimal fee - in the UK its around £40 or so). You see, in the event that the OP's device would have been subject to an act of god (as per the terms of Apple Care), the onus is on Apple to prove that it is so. There is very little room to manoeuvre around that.

I also expected it to be a lot worse. I'm curious, did any of the aluminum tear?

No, aluminum did not tear.

Just got back from Apple. They gave me an OOW replacement. $299. She said as long as 80-90% of all the parts are there, they will allow OOW replacements. They all gawked over it, said it was near the top of the mangled devices they have seen.

Glad they were able to help you out!

This is from the iPhone 4/4s Visual/Mechanical Inspection Guide. AFAIK, this is for worldwide use, but it could just be for the US. Our laws are very lenient compared to the EU and UK.

This should apply to all Apple products, with some minor changes, but the catastrophic damage is carried over in all the VMI guides that have leaked online.

For Apple Eyes Only. Wonder what happened. :p

Wow that is awesome! I hope you bought AppleCare+ if you were still eligible. I guessing the one you bought from Best Buy is going back?

Congratulations. Apple comes through again with great customer service.

As I posted yesterday, I left my iPad Air on the hood of my car, it flew off on the freeway and was hit multiple times. I decided to go back and see if I could find it today, it was there, not in good shape. The top layer of glass has separated from the rest of the body, but all the other pieces are 'intact'. What do you think my chances of getting an out of warranty replacement are?

You should tell the genius bar it has a dead pixel with a straight face :D

You should have told them you dropped it on thick carpet and it "just smashed"... I bet they would have replaced it right there for you for free. xD
