I do think apple needs to up it to 2gb in the next one, but don't think the issue is that severe currently. I recreated your scenario n that video and more. My tabs didn't refresh. Maybe because my 3rd gen ipad disables the Gaussian blur effect?

Safari does refresh every now and then when using it normally, but in that walmart scenario, it didn't.
I have video proof, and because you can't recreate it in you testing, it's not a problem, and my argument is invalid.

Gotcha.

iPad Air - how severe is the RAM problem?

Which is of absolutely zero consequence because I switch apps all the time. At which point Android takes far longer to reload than the iPad - so as irritating as it may be, I'll say again, it's still far better than the alternatives.

My iPad Air (returned) reloaded when I switch apps and my Android tablet will sometimes. In this respect per design Android does not suffer from this issue like you claimed it did.

I only brought up switching apps to be sure we were comparing Apples to Apples not as a scapegoat for your claim.

In my case, no I don't think the RAM issue is very severe since that scenario worked fine for me, but like I said that's on my iPad 3 without Gaussian blur. Maybe it is an iPad Air/full iOS7 problem. Maybe the Air did need to ship with 2GB, but it didn't.

So in the meantime, iPads will refresh when it runs out of memory (and will still refresh even with 2GB if there are enough tabs open), that's just how Apple designed iOS to work.

EDIT: I want to clarify that I didn't buy the iPad Air mainly because it didn't come with 2gb. I'm fully aware of how stingy Apple is with their RAM. (They're still shipping the MBA's with 4gb by default for example...) That's just how the company operates, always putting in "just enough". People will buy it regardless, because new and shiny, and because the majority simply don't need that much RAM. Their answer to those that do need it is expensive BTO options.

If we want to see a possible trend that could be coming for phones/tablets, look to the LG G3, which is shipping in 2 configurations: 16GB/2GB ram and 32GB/3GB ram. If Apple were to do the same, they could put 2GB in the 128GB only version. I seriously hope they don't this, because if they do, we will likely whine about it on the forums for awhile, then break down and buy it in the end <_<

I've used an iPad as my primary home computing device for years. Does it sometimes reload when I switch apps? Yes. Does it every time? Not by a long shot. The brand-new, top of the line Samsung tablet I have which has not 1/10 of the apps installed as my iPad reloads tabs every time I switch to do anything else. That's the point.

I don't think anyone was saying that other tablets are better at this. What many are saying is that an iPad 4 with iOS 6 was better at this. Apple shouldn't be going backwards with the Air and iOS 7.

That's odd because I posted earlier that I had the opposite experience with my Galaxy Tab 4 where I was able to open multiple tabs on the stock browser and have multiple apps running in the background (multi-windowed) and not one reload. I even was able to check and respond to an email while typing my post at the time.

Do your tabs reload with ONLY safari running, and ONLY two tabs?
