A bit of controversy with people who liked the new cover and people who liked the old cover.

They said the old one scratched the iPad but it had a stronger triangle.

Anyone here own one? I want to get one for my iPad Air 2. I don't want a case.

Also, any thoughts on whether the Smart Covers will need to be redesigned because the new iPad will be thinner?

Yes, the old one did scratch the iPad, but had a stronger triangle. However, if you are thinking of using one for the Air, it won't fit, because the shape of the Air is different from the iPads 2-4, for which those covers were made.

Yes the other covers are too big. I wonder if the covers for the Air will fit the Air 2. I know the Air 2 will be thinner.

IMO, the apple branded smart covers are actually rather dumb. They are overpriced, flimsy and annoying. There are soooooo many more better choices for less cash out there.

Avoid them.

I just don't want any bulk.

I think the new smart covers are fine, and actually like it better than the one I have for my iPad 4. The magnetic system is MUCH stronger, and the tri-fold is pretty well just as stable. The big problem I have with them is that there is no adjustability to the angle it sits at - and it's almost worthless for video calling - which we do a lot of. You have to hope it's at the right angle or find something else to help adjust it.

I hate the new smart covers. They're ok as just covers, but as a stand the tri-fold is utterly useless and collapses if you look at it funny.

Nay, not so. I use one with my Air, and I bought a replacement for my rMini today because I flat wore my first one out between the 1st and second gen Mini. I find them to be very useful and protective. No scratches from them. Now, it may be a different story with the older iPads and the metal hinges, but I love the current design with cloth covering the magnet. The triangle has not been a problem for me either. Quite strong.
I bought a 10 dollar look a like that fell off the mini constantly. Weak magnet.
Stick with the overpriced yet very functional Apple branded goodies.

I like both covers for their own reasons. The first gen smart cover did in fact scratch the iPad (quite badly, in my case), but I really like the four panel design of it. The iPad Air's smart cover has the three panel design, which doesn't allow for as many positions and combinations for stands and such, but I like that there are no metal contacts on it.

i just laugh when i see people pay $40 for a cover, it just makes no sense

I quite like the smart cover. I haven't had much exposure to third-party covers, but I think the Apple one is great.

That's the thing though. I don't want a case.

The new iPad will be 6.6mm thin. You can't put a case on that. It will ruin it.

The Cover is $40. They have cheaper ones but I've seen them fall apart quickly. The magnet tears off from the cover.

Did you fold it with the felt side in or out? Because if it was in then it collapses. That's the wrong way.

Fold this way

I do fold it with the felt side out, and it still collapses. The three panel design is a lot less stable than the four panel one.
