I was wondering if there was a way to copy pictures to my thumbdrive and view them on my iPad from my thumbdrive using the usb connector in my camera kit from apple without having to copy the pictures to my iPad?

Unfortunately it only allows you to view the thumbnails of the photos without importing them.

No harm in importing them then deleting them?

No you have to imort them, then deleate afterwards.

(USB has to be formated FAT 32 and photos in folder called DCIM, I believe.)

above is correct. just to confirm: anything inside the DCIM folder on your thumbdrive (but nothing outside DCIM folder) will be visible to the iPad when you plug the thumbdrive into the Camera Connection Kit adapter. but you only see thumbnails when you first plug it in - you must import to iPad first if you want to view them in detail.

however, note that you are given the option to import all, or just selected items. so it shouldn't be a problem to import, view, then delete, as other people have already said.

Funnily enough, it lets you import files which aren't even compatible.

yes, I was going to mention that. You can import PDF files or incompatible movie format files too. but of course the Photos app can't play them, and you get a generic gray thumbnail. and can't view or do anything with them.

but be careful if you import an invalid file, you might not be able to delete it within the Photos app! I was playing around with this and couldn't delete an imported PDF (since you have to view a file before you get the delete option). Ended up deleting it via USB and running Image Capture on my Mac...
