iPad App Prices

The iPad App store is now up on iTunes. I was able to access them, and even download some of them.

OMG are they expensive! 😱

Only some of them are expensive, but most of them are pretty reasonable. I was surprised to see some that are $0.99-$1.99, but it seems a lot are 4.99-6.99. The most expensive non-GPS app I've seen so far is $19.99 (Things).

Definitely no impulse buying though.

I only have a couple of bought apps and 1 of them, which is 14.99, is the same for the iPad as when I bought it for the Touch. So they're not all higher.

I will hold off a bit before I purchase certain apps. The price WILL go down very fast for most of them. A lot in the first week. I don't want to be the person that pays triple for certain apps a week before they lower the price. Happened on the iPhone. It isn't about being cheap, it is about keeping my loose change for McDonalds.

We've all learned that from the Phone/Touch, if you wait a few weeks the apps get a lower sale price.

As stated, it's not $10, it's a whole bunch of $10 hits adding up and not much to show for it. One of the reasons I can afford to buy an iPad is that I don't just blow money randomly without thinking about it.

I'm used to evaluating software before I buy it. The first 'premium' priced app I bought still seems to be in an early beta phase, so I'm done until the dust settles (both price-wise and development/review-wise).

The most expensive non-GPS app I've seen so far is $19.99 (Things).

That's exactly it. I have owned an iPhone since day one and I have only ever bought one app (for .99) because it's too easy to buy junk and find out it is just that. However, today I bought one game (Worms HD for 4.99) for my iPad because I remembered it as a kid and want to play it with my kids. I'm also considering Command & Conquer, but want to see if the price is going to come down (12.99). I also just noticed they have Settlers for the iPhone, but want to see an iPad version.

Another problem is that you don't know how committed a developer is to an app compared to buying standard PC software. A PC developer has had to do a lot more work and has much more invested in his product whereas an iPhone OS developer may have spent time but that's really it. They could easily move on to another app (since most seem to have several).

Of course, it's all about free enterprise. If you build the best app and can justify to your user base why they should spend X dollars, then run with it. I'm working on an app and have a model strategy that I think will resolve all of the issues in this thread and give users what they want for a reasonable price.
