IPAD App Questions

I am still using the original ver of the IPAD and most if not all current downloadable apps are for a much higher OS they my current one. Is there a way to download an older ver of an app or are they made unavailable once a new one comes out.

When you try to download an app the App Store should offer you a compatible version of the app if one exists (if the developer has made one available essentially).
