Well then, i don't think you needed a MacBook in the first place.

Here's how I see it:

iMac, iPad, iPhone. To be ideally fine.
MacBook Pro, iPhone. To be fine.
MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone. To be useless.
iMac, MacBook Pro, iPhone. To be fine.
iMac, MacBook(Pro), iPad, iPhone. Is an overkill, and useless.

If the iPad replaced your MacBook, then congrats!

Very good way to look at it. I had a similar revelation when I first bought the iPad. I have iteration #3 on this list and realized I really should be at iteration 1.

I think you could maybe add macbook air where ipad is represented if a lightweight device with a keyboard is essential

While this seems goofy to me, maybe they've conducted market research that shows them there's a need for an iPad accessory that makes it more netbook-like:

Now there's a step backwards. I like the way the keyboard faces down on the desk, ready to mop up dust and other debris.

Not for me! But if I spent that much time on the road and needed a keyboard I'd buy a MacBook Air not an iPad.

I think the appeal of the iPad has been diminished a bit for me personally when the new MacBook Air hit coupled with the announcement of the Mac App Store and OSX Lion. I'm waiting until Lion is released and fully revealed to decide between iPad 2 and a new Air. There realistically isn't much the iPad does better than a traditional Apple notebook besides games......but those will soon flood the Mac App Store also.

I'm probably hovering somewhere in the overkill category -_-

Currently I have iMac, MacBook Air, iPad, iPod touch.

Of these, MacBook Air gets the least use. I basically use it when I have to format Word documents while on the go. If I didn't need to do some precise formatting in Word, I would probably sell the Air.

The touch is mostly for listening to music and for the pedometer app, and reading ebooks in situations where taking out the iPad is too awkward.

The iMac is my main workstation, and the iPad is in use almost constantly when I'm away from the iMac.

I think this is a pretty good setup. YMMV.

I disagree with this. MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPhone are the same as iMac, iPad and iPhone.

Some professionals need to carry around their workstations, while others prefer to have a more permanent workstation. These days, MBP's and iMacs are nearly identical in terms of performance, and they're really not that far away in screen size (17 inch versus the 20s), especially when you consider external monitors.

Plus, you have the added bonus of not always having to be connected to a power source.

I think the iPad will eventually be the primary creative workstation anyway (handling final cut, protools, photoshop, etc). It will probably take 5 years to get there though and I'm assuming apple will add a "pro" version of the iPad within the next few years as well...

Macbook air costs considerably more and doesnt have the apps or touchpad, can you dompdf annotations and pdf form filing on a macbook air? If you can younprobably need to purchase expensive adobe software. Plus the ipad has many other advantages like battery life.
