With the Back-to-School promotion rumored to start next week I have a question. Last summer my son took advantage of the sale and got a free iPod but, if I remember correctly, Apple also allowed you to take the iPod's price ($200 or so) and apply it to an iPad. Am I just imagining this or did any of you actually buy your iPad like this?

No. The iPad does not qualify. You can only get the discount on an iPod, which is clearly stated in the T&C.

you can only receive an ipod. they give you an 8gb ipod touch or you can get the credit for that model and buy a higher capacity model.

The BTS sale is to clear out old iPod inventory to make room for new inventory. iPad can't even stay in stock at full regular pricing, so you can bet they have no need to clear them out.
