I'm in the iPad-is-all-I-need-I-have-my-work-Windows-machine-in-a-pinch camp. For some reason my company has decided that we no longer need iTunes and it was yanked from our software center. If I wanted an actual backup of my iPad (not iCloud) without iTunes, I'm SOL, yeah? I usually jump on the public betas, but I don't know that I'm going to do that without the ability to restore. Thoughts? I know this has been discussed elsewhere, but it seems to have been awhile since the topic was surfaced.

You could buy a cheap laptop or headless desktop just for iTunes, but otherwise I think you're out of luck.

Without iTunes your only option is iCloud and DO NOT install beta software without having the ability to restore from backup.

If you truly only need it for backups, one of those intel compute sticks or similar devices that plug into the HDMI port on your TV would work fine. You could use it to do an itunes backup before you update the pad, then unplug it & store it in a desk drawer until you need to upgrade or revert the ipad the next time.

This could be a viable solution, although I have to admit that I have never used one myself.

Makes sense. I guess my use case is different as both my computer backups only total 6.5GB on iCloud. I do pay $12 a year for 50GB a month though.

Wow that's really low usage. I'm hitting almost 50GB here.

UK comparison last time I checked I’m paying 79p per month 50G Icloud stoarage.

7.3 G used since owning 2 macboook pro’s 1 IPad Air and more recently IPad Pro 10.5

I think iCloud storage is so cheap that it's a no brainer . I don't understand why people are so resistant to paying a few pennies for the peace of mind & auto backup.

Having said that I wonder how a lot of us have such low usage. Not sure if I'm doing anything wrong here.

The cost is not what bothers me personally. I tried the backup on icloud and it was just too slow, especially the restore. If I want to restore my iPad (or iPhone), I don't want to wait all day to download all of my data back onto the iDevice.

Yeah that's an issue. This is why I tend to do this overnight connected to the internet at home. Although it depends on the connection speed and the amount of data you have stored on the cloud but it's not too bad yet for me.

My storage usage is set to change soon.

Once I find motivation to start studying from home.
