Friend of mine bought a 3GS from another friend of his, the 3GS is on 4.3.3 with ipad baseband installed, he wants to get rid of the ipad baseband and update it to ios 5. Does anyone know if this is possible?

You can't get rid of the iPad bb.
But you can update to 5.0.1 using a custom ipsw with redsnow.
