I'm asking for a friend. He wants to buy a WIFI iPad 3G 64GB in the U.S. and bring it to Poland. Question: should he activate it in the U.S. - if he does, can he use it in Poland? And if he only activates it in Poland, will he be locked out of iTunes and App Store applications? TIA!!

No point him buying the 3g version, unless he knows he won't be able to log on to a data network provider in Poland. It works differently to a phone. He'll need a data package in Poland.

He could use the wifi, but he'll need a Polish carrier that has the micro sim and a data package for the iPad for which there is none as it is not officially available in Poland. If he bought and registered a data package in the US then when he returns to Poland he will pay roaming costs.

I say just buy a wifi, or alternatively the 3g version but knowing he couldn;t use it in Poland (for the time being).

Not great advice. Makes no sense recommending NOT to buy a 3G because 3G service may not yet be available - especially for Europe where travel between countries is commonplace. In any case, looks like 3G microSIMS will be available anytime now:

The iPad activation is the same as activating an iPod rather than an iPhone. The only thing it does is kick the iPad out of the "connect to iTunes" screen. Where you activate has no influence on how you use it afterward.
