Apple's Camera Connection Kit for iPad began shipping earlier this week and customers have started receiving the adapters. This YouTube video provides a hands-on demonstration using the kit to import photos directly to the iPad:

A few other notes of interest have been collected on the internet. This includes:

- USB headphone/headset will work on the iPad through the connection kit. Skype phone call was tested and "the quality was just terrific" - Tidbits
- USB keyboards can be used - TUAW
- iLounge had some early notes which revealed that the iPad emails pictures out at 2048x1536 resolution rather than the iPhone's 800x600 resolution, but if you copy/paste the images into an email, you can get full resolution images sent out.
- iPhoto brings in full resolution images with EXIF information intact. - iLounge

I can't understand why a simple SD card slot couldn't have been integrated into this thing. If they managed to fit everything they've put inside that prototype iphone, an SD slot could've been done with the ipad.

Does it support the new SDXC standard?

This is for higher capacity SD cards from bigger cameras.

Why in the hell couldn't have Apple just given us a USB port and an SD Card slot on the iPad. It would have solved all of these other problems and things people cannot do on the iPad. I just don't get no USB port as so many devices can be used with USB. The iPad could be so much better just with one lousy USB port.

Anyways, at least this is some decent news and provides somewhat of a workaround.

I agree. "Yea, we've been able to integrate cameras, accelerometers, magnetometers, quad core processors, miniDisplay ports, and illuminated keyboards... but we couldn't figure out how to integrate a card reading slot and a USB port, so you'll have to buy an adaptor for $30 until next year when we'll integrate a camera and a slot."

What annoys me about this is I bought the first gen of the camera connector years ago for my 20GB iPod. I could transfer RAW images over just fine. Now that same $30 adapter that looks EXACTLY like this new one won't work on my iPad or my 32GB iPhone.

THAT is very annoying.

It's nice to see at least some other access granted via that USB port. I would still like to see it opened up a LOT more than it currently is, and while I don't forsee it being built-in at least for a while, being able to have one period is a nice start.

Regardless of any possible hardware missteps by Apple, what would be great would be the ability to easily upload these photos from the iPad to a mobile me, Facebook or flickr gallery as you can in iPhoto. When I'm on vacation I want to be able to view and then share my photos without having to wait until I get home to my desktop.

I realize you can probably do this with third party apps, but it would be great if that functionality existed as part of the OS.

Regardless of whether you think it should have one, they didn't exclude it because they couldn't figure out how. They didn't want to sacrifice the design (internally or externally). While I don't mind that decision, I understand why that does turn many people away from the device.

There is an Apple made MobileMe and Mobile Gallery App.

1 USB and 1 SD ports, right? I completely agree. This is just total SJ. The fewer holes I can have in my devices, the better. And it does make them look sleek, but really so less practical then they could have been to start with.

Anyway, I am obviously getting the camera connection kit.

Let's say your camera stores photos on CompactFlash (most DSLRs).
So this means an SD reader doesn't help you in any way (built in or otherwise).
This means you can only get the photos off your camera by directly connecting the iPad to the camera or a compactFlash reader via USB cord.
This means you can theoretically just keep your iPad USB dongle permanently attached to your camera USB cord, functionally eliminating the dongle (you'd need to carry around the cord either way)

So how would this be functionally any different than if the iPad had a built-in USB port? Either way I'm plugging one thing in and out to get my photos. I guess the difference is $29, but that amount of money is not worth this much bitching.

iPhone Tethering?

Anyone tried connecting an iPhone to the iPad through the USB?

Perhaps the iPad could tether to the iPhone data connection that way?

I wonder if iPad support a webcam connect thru the usb adapter. If so that would be great.

People wanted a cheap tablet, they got it. How do you think Apple is going to make money out of this device which it's been said they're already losing on it?

I mean, the iPad is cheaper than an iPhone lol. Did you really think Apple was going to miss out? They didn't add these ports because everything was pre-planned. You want USB, SD? You're paying it for it, lol. I mean common, the iPad is the first product of its kind, and it didn't even come with a Docking station! I bought the 32GB version, paid 700 bucks with the Apple case, and taxes. I, then bought the dock, 30 bucks, and now buying this, another 30 bucks. I will have spent about 800 bucks total for a device that's labeled as being $599.

Was I caught offguard? No, this is fine for me and totally expected. Those people who complain about why Apple didn't add this to begin with, would have been complaining about the price if Apple would have included these ports in the device with a higher price tag. You just can't please everyone, because they will always find everything unjustifiable. Go figure. Business is business, and Apple (just like every other company) is in the business of making money.
