I don't know how long it has been a thing, but I just upgraded to 8.3 on my iPad Air that I've been neglecting lately, and decided to change around the icon locations. I mindlessly took an app out and placed it on my dock, which already had 4 icons, not thinking anything of it. It actually worked, which surprised me. I was so excited!

Sorry if I'm late :D I wanted to share if this is a new thing! A quick Google search gave irrelevant results, so I figured it was a new thing.

I also tried this on my iPhone 6 Plus which also has 8.3, and it didn't work. So it's iPad only.

Lol. Sorry everyone! I had no clue. I always assumed it was 4 icons. I'm wayyy late haha. I know about the folder one though. Once again, sorry xD

It still confuses me why 6 icons can be put in the dock, but only 4 on the Home screen. I mean the 6 in the Dock can be read OK. What's the difference?

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I didn't know about it until just now. Thanks for posting this thread, taught me something :)

It has to do with rotation and the way it rearranges the icons going from portrait to landscape and vice versa. I would like to have more icons on my home screen too.

Yes, I noticed that too. I guess they did it this way to keep from having to force icons to switch screens. Example: the icon for the app you want is in the lower right corner, switching orientation changes the number and of icons on the screen, which moves that icon you wanted over to the next screen, forcing you to swipe. I suppose they could do it by keeping the icons from changing positions when orientation changes, but this will yield either a crowded portrait view or a sparse landscape view. Though I'm just guessing here.

lol I have owned three iPad generations in the past and I didn't know until I randomly moved it on there by mistake a few months ago. my mind was blown as well

btw your folder simply being called "Nope" made a laugh out loud

Me too, I had my unused apps in a folder called 'not used' not any more!
