My granddaughter commandeered my wife’s iPad and played games yesterday afternoon and this morning. The battery died at about 11:30. When I plugged it in using the supplied charger, it was exactly noon and I didn't think much about it. I came back in the house and looked at the clock and it was exactly 12:30. I wondered how much it charged in 30 minutes so I looked. Then at 1:00 I checked again. Then my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder took over and I checked every 1/2 hour, recorded it in Excel and charted it.

Conclusion the iPad charges at about 20% per hour for the first 4 hours reaching approximately 75%. It then takes a little less than 2 hours for the last 25%.

The iPad was on but cover was closed so it was “inactive”. It might take longer if you were using it while it was charging. I also wonder how long it would take if you shut it down completely. Maybe next time :)

This.

Mine fully charged while I was asleep and lasts the full day(with heavy usage). can't ask for more than that.

Do the same thing with the dropping rate
obviously this is going to depend on way more factors than just "how fast the battery depletes"

Brightness
WiFi
Location Services
LTE
Bluetooth

All are going to affect how fast it depletes.

Many sites have already done battery tests (typically brightness set to 50-60% with a constant video looping over wifi) and have gotten results similar to what apple claims (10 hrs wifi, 9 LTE).

I believe mine lasts longer than advertised. I have used it non-stop the past 5 hours. Surfing web, playing some drawing game vs my wife, and buying a couple of books. As pf right now, I still have 78% left. My screen brightness level is just above 50%.

Even though I love my new iPad I can not imagine doing 10 hours on it in a single day.

I fully drained my battery, plugged it in and went to sleep. Woke up 6 hours later and it was at 80%. I was using the supplied wall adapter of course.

plane ride, car trip, commuting to/from work and using it at work, school.... plenty of long usage scenarios.

Knock your self out. 99% of the iPad 3 owners will be very happy with the battery life and charge rate.

You may not. My LX570 has 110volt built in and as far as commuting, LOL, give me a break! If you look hard enough you can even find that YOU are flawed and not perfect!

where did i say that i wanted more than 10 hours????

I said, other sites have performed battery tests and found similar results to what apple claims (10 hrs wifi, 9 LTE)...

So maybe instead of telling me I'm "flawed" because you don't know how to read, you should work on your own reading comprehension...

I swear.. people on here post dumber stuff by the day.

Ditto Matt's comment. Even on the days of heaviest usage (eg. 5am start and 11-hour flight) I've never run out of power, and it always fully charges overnight. Executive summary: battery-life is never something I have to think about.

Your OCD is awesome, nice chart! :)

On the weekends, I use my iPad all day and just charge it every night when I go to sleep. It's always 100% the next morning. :D

Very useful info. Thanks, Lenny.

Was this done with the supplied iPad charger or something different? Might be interesting to capture the same info using an iPhone charger.

Thanks for sharing! I'm saving this :D on average mine only drops to 50-60% so 4-5 hours is not bad at all.

I applaud your OCD Lenny.

Shows what some of the guys on the forum have been trying to explain, about how charging works with this kind of battery.

On my second charge, iPad 3 has been charging overnight for 8+ hours and is still at only 91%... :(

I fully discharged it for the initial recharging and it only took about 5 hours to charge. This is a problem.

Did you do a hard reset of the iPad? If not try that, could just be the sensor for the battery needs to recalibrate.
