On my second charge, iPad 3 has been charging overnight for 8+ hours and is still at only 91%... :(

I fully discharged it for the initial recharging and it only took about 5 hours to charge. This is a problem.
you are probably using an iPhone or iPod charger and not an iPad charger.

I would love to see someone post up another similar graph, but this time have brightness at 100% and doing some typically moderate activity (that keeps the screen on) on it, like setting it to run some video in a loop or if someone's willing to actually use it for the duration of the charging.

That will be a very very interesting graph.

i don't understand the big complaint about charge time on this. I plug mine in at night before bed and when i wake up in the morning it's at 100%. I can understand if you need to charge it during the day, but since owning the iPad 1 I have never needed to charge it during day and would only do it at night.

My granddaughter commandeered my wife’s iPad and played games yesterday afternoon and this morning. The battery died at about 11:30. When I plugged it in using the supplied charger, it was exactly noon and I didn't think much about it. I came back in the house and looked at the clock and it was exactly 12:30. I wondered how much it charged in 30 minutes so I looked. Then at 1:00 I checked again. Then my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder took over and I checked every 1/2 hour, recorded it in Excel and charted it.

Conclusion the iPad charges at about 20% per hour for the first 4 hours reaching approximately 75%. It then takes a little less than 2 hours for the last 25%.

The iPad was on but cover was closed so it was “inactive”. It might take longer if you were using it while it was charging. I also wonder how long it would take if you shut it down completely. Maybe next time :)

Thanks for sharing kind Sir! I enjoy reading logical and sensible experiments regarding this battery problem with the new iPad. ;)

I have experienced a 6 1/2 hour charge time which isn't bad. Although I charged mine from 13%.

I ran mine down to 5%, plugged it in and went to bed. I woke up and found it at 100%. That's all I needed to know and all that I ask for.

Agreed. I charge my iDevices over night. I usually end up running my phone and Nano down throughout the date, at which point I plug them in to my work PC. However, I dont use the iPad enough during the day to run it down.

Did you do a hard reset of the iPad? If not try that, could just be the sensor for the battery needs to recalibrate.
No, going to run it down to zero. Took forever to charge the last ~10%. May have been a one time deal.

No, using new iPad charger.

ipad was at 13% when I went to bed.
Plugged it in with supplied charger, and woke up 6 hours later and it was at 54%. Should I call apple?

Did you use the supplied cable as well, or a old one you had laying around? I found that with a generic 6' cable, my factory charger was only able to maintain my iPad's battery when I was using it, not charge it. But when I switched to the factory provided cable, it charged at a rate of about 10% an hour, even though I was still using it.

In any case, I wouldn't worry about it on the first couple charge cycles.

I have a question. I already have my iPhone wall-charger plugged into my surge protector and I don't want to use my iPad wall-charger.

Will my new iPad charge substantially slower with my iPhone wall-charger as opposed to the supplied iPad one?

I finally ran mine down to dead this morning from the first charge to 100% last Friday at launch. I plugged it in when I got to work at 7 am. I hit 100% a couple of minutes ago. So about 5 hours 20 minutes. Not that bad. It's not like I can't grab it and take it somewhere when it's partially charged. Hell, 50% will probably last you 2 days.

I would try powering it off and see how long it takes. That should avoid anything stuck running in the background.

The battery is 11,666 mah according to ZDNET (http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/new-ipads-most-revolutionary-feature-is-its-battery/18985) which means it should take just about 6 hrs to charge from a FULL discharge (charger is rated 2amps at 5V which is approx 2000mah or 10watts). 11666/2000=5.833 hrs with nothing else going one (this is theoretical of course and it probably will take less because that is from a FULL discharge and the battery will never fully discharge.

So with stuff running it could easily take 6-7 hours or more.

Absolutely right on the money.

The iPad charger will charge my iPhone slower? Interesting.
LOL, Duhhh!, sorry, I read it reversed.

The iPAD charger will charge it the same as the iPhone charger (no faster) because the device itself limits the charging rate. It won't hurt it. You could hit it with a 400 amp hr charger and it wouldn't matter. I corrected the reply. Sorry.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the clarification.

I just did my 1st charge since getting my iPad on the 16th and using it quite a bit, so I'm not sure what ridiculous voodoo spells people are putting on theirs to make it drain so badly...

Anyway, here's my results (really bored today)
