ipad model A2197, less than 2 years old, pretty lightly used, mostly as a remote schoolwork machine (for the couple of months we were locked down) with the apple smart keyboard. Light use otherwise.

Used it last night maybe 15 minutes as a laptop replacement - a bit of surfing, that was it. I plugged it in to the mac to charge overnight, had maybe 15% charge left. No updates as far as I know. This morning I went to turn the ipad on and... nothing. I thought it might've not charged properly so I plugged it in with the ipad charger and functional usb cable (checked it with my phone - it charges) and left it charging for a couple hours. Still nothing. Plugged it back into the mac and opened itunes, but the ipad isn't available there either. No extended applecare.

Short of taking it back to the Apple store - anything else I can do to help at this point?

You can try to force restart the iPad:

If your iPad doesn't have the home button:
  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
If your iPad DOES have a home button:

1. Press and hold Power and Home at the same time until the device powers down
2. Press power to turn back on.

I think the model's an iPad 7th gen with physical Home button so hard reset should be press Power and Home buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.

Maybe try leaving the iPad plugged into the 12W iPad charger for a bit longer.

Was the iPad ever dropped or something? Also, have you tried shining a flashlight on the screen? Could just be the backlight.

thanks, all.

This wifi-only ipad has been very well cared for and not used much - never dropped. Hard to guess at how many times it's been charged but I'd say maybe 25? It has mostly sat on a desk or rarely used as entertainment on a road trip or two.

neither force restarts worked. It has been on the charger for a while now, 2 hours maybe. In addition to all night, of course. AFAIK, it did not run out of battery before I plugged it into the mac last night. I did not try executing any updates.

Time for Apple.

Call Apple and ask for their professional guidance.

Have you tried using a different cable to charge the iPad? The charging cable might be broken.

Yes use different cables, and charger and new outlet. Check inside the charging hole see if there any crud or garbage inside the charging port

All possible combinations of 3 cables (2 apple, 1 aftermarket), 2 chargers (ipad charger, aftermarket charger), 2 outlets all charge iphone. Same don't charge the ipad, or it charges fine and the display is kaput. The lightning port is as clean as a whistle, but I blasted it repeatedly with can of compressed air, just in case.

Apple's professional guidance via chat was verbatim from the support site:
  1. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  2. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  3. Then press and hold the Power button until the device restarts.
Followed by, "Would you like me to schedule an appointment for you or would you like to ship the ipad back for analysis and repair?"

Out of warranty repair charge is $249.

In the meantime, my absolute workhorse of a 2011 27" imac soldiers on, daily, and entirely unrepaired ever (including the original HDD) for the last 10 years. ¯\_( ツ)_/¯ Of course, it still *can* be opened up if need be.

If the latest little imac is any indication, I am afraid that the pending big imac (which I was hoping to buy) will be another big ipad on a stand, with some input ports. And when it breaks, there's nothing you can do except bring it in.

Finally got around to visiting an Apple store today. They (tried to) run the troubleshooting routine but since it wouldn’t power up at all, they couldn’t tell me what was wrong.

And since it was (6 months) out of warranty with no applecare, the repair cost was $249.

But...
the genius figured it was the battery anyway so he said he’d give me a replacement ipad for the cost of a battery: $99.

Definitely glad I took it in rather than send it in by mail. Seems less likely I would’ve gotten the same deal.

You must’ve been nice to the Apple store people. Sounds like they figured out a way to do you a solid.
