iPads need to evolve into desktop replacements.
iOS makes a perfect platform for browsers and apps, paired it with a 21" LCD for a perfect desktop appliance.

This, numbers going down doesn't mean the tablet business is dead, it means everyone has one

I see iPad's everywhere, subway, buses, coffee shops, airports.... but the problem is lot of them are iPad 2, Apple gave little reason for anyone to update

When a product segment sees 20% declines quarter after quarter, its pretty much on its death bed.

The market is speaking loud and clear. "Everyone has one" doesn't cut it as an excuse. At some point you have to accept the reality of the situation.

There's no real reason to upgrade anything above an iPad 2 if you're just a casual user since iPad 2 and up support iOS 8.3

Don't get me wrong, I'm the kinda guy who upgrades to the latest and greatest every year, but most aren't like me and will use something until it stops working, which is usually around a year or so after software support ends. Based on that I predict iPad sales will continue to fall for another 2 years unless Apple do something about it.

You need a keyboard and you need a good way to shuttle files between programs. If you're going to do actual work.

iOS is built to be idiot-proof and malware-proof, but unfortunately that makes it pretty work-proof for a lot of purposes.

I have been screaming this for a while. Totally agree. But here is the thing, with the new Macbook, you pretty much have the future iPad. Just add touchscreen. At this point it seem there would be more work to get the iPad to be fully functional that it would be to get the Macbook to be touch friendlier.

I have money Tim !

Dear Tim,

I have money to send up your :apple: iPad sales but only if you bring out a much better spec iPad mini and a decent monitor I can plug my RMBP into.

Maybe when you've all stopped tinkering with your new toy you can update your core products real soon, I mean it's not as if you're short of money to do it ...

Ta !

I needed new remotes for my Crestron system. Could either go Crestron remote or tablet. Walked into Target which had a bin of RCA Android tablets for $45. Bought 10 of them.

Wasn't going to buy 10 iPad Minis.

Not shocking that the marketshare of the bottom of the barrel tablets is increasing.

Based on the fact we still use our iPad2 just fine, I think it's because once you have a good tablet, they last a while. Sure, the new lighter and faster one would be nice, but "nice" does not get another $500 out of me.

So my guess is, there's a lot of customers out there that are "ok" with what they have and won't upgrade until they get something really worth upgrading for.

There are all kinds of contributing factors we can point to for this, but I think the real elephant in the room that no one wants to admit is that most people still prefer to use a Mac.

For some the iPad is indispensable. But for most the iPad is novel and not really necessary.

Until something really changes with the iPad to make it more of a content creation tool than a consumption tool, I will not buy another iPad (I had the original and iPad 2-- gave them both to family members).

I work in consulting, travel A LOT and often even when on a vacation, I tend to bring some work with me. Also, I needed something light and portable - even the retina Macbook Pro just feels like a big heavy brick when going on vacation, etc. I have tried to remote into my Mac on an iPad, I have tried the keyboards - but the lack of a mouse makes it annoying to review Excel sheets, edit PowerPoints, etc.

About 6 months ago I bought a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It is a tablet for when I need to edit PDFs (one thing I loved about my iPad), my handwritten notes are like my handwritten pen and paper notes, has a beautiful screen and has a mouse (love the Surface collapsible mouse). Its lightweight and thin that I can easily throw it in a handbag.

I keep my iPad mini to watch movies on planes and for when I am bored sitting on my couch to quickly google something or pull up a recipe.

With the exception of my Surface Pro, my house is all Mac but that Surface Pro is a nice machine and I can do everything in my job and then some with it.

Selling 12.6m ($5.4b) after 21.42m ($8.9b) during holiday qtr is not a product on its death bed Look at the data:

"More than 50 percent of iPad sales in the U.S., Japan, and the U.K. are by people who've never owned an iPad. This suggests that there’s still a huge addressable market for the device. The first-time buyer percentage goes up past 70 percent in developing markets like China,” Cook said

Mac revenue has been between $4-6b since 2010 and no one is saying that is on its death bed.

We won't see a leveling off until around qtr 4 2015. Probably around the 10-12m mark during non holiday months.

There is a reason you paid $45 for them, they suck and they are trying to get rid of them by pricing them like that. I'm sure you will make full use of them briefly but at the end of the day, it will be more electronic trash stacked up around your house in the near future. Yes the market share will grow but it will not create sticky customers. Basically it will be a waste because no one will ever go back and buy another RCA tablet. How much profit could RCA make off a $45 tablet with no ecosystem?

iPads don't have a large market share but millions of folks have them and don't need to upgrade every year. The older iPads work just fine and are still being updated to the latest iOS. Marketshare maybe tapped out unless they lower the price. Apple doesn't care about market share as profit margins are far more important. Apple doesn't want to emulate RCA, RCA wants to emulate Apple.

I can't agree with this.

1. Reading on my mac vs in bed on my iPad is a completely different experience. I much, much prefer using my iPad.

2. During Lunch breaks, its so much easier to read on my iPad as opposed to my computer.

3. GAMES! The range of games on iPad far surpass that on my mac.

4. Walking and working. When I took a tour of a building we were thinking of renting, it was much easier to use my iPad to see my notes/questions, pull up the floor plan, take pictures of the space, etc.

For non-business work, I use my iPad about 90% of the time compared to my Macbook Air.

That said, I'm still on iPad 2!!!! Nothing has made me upgrade yet.

I also replaced my iPad Air with the 11" MBA. I love it, but you are right, I miss my iPad in many cases. That being said, my 6+ has made me miss it less. I would love to have another iPad Air, but can't justify spending the money.

In my case, an 11" iPad, capable of running OS X with a removable keyboard would be divine.

Sales will grow again when there is actually something *new* about the next generation.

It's a good problem to have, in a way, because even old iPads just work well for a long time for how most people tend to use them (surf web, read news, etc).

The point of my post went right over your head.
I needed a tablet for a single use/low horsepower application.
The RCA tablet works extremely well at it.

I wonder how much of the market share for Lenovo is made up of real tablets and not Windows 8.1 PCs in tablet form.

What are "real" tablets ? The tablet mode in 8.1 seems to run fine on smaller touch screens, and if you need the desktop you have access to that as well.

Its funny

how quickly the "post PC" era ended and we are now in the "PC Renaissance" era.

Not surprised as many people have one and are satisfied for the most part.

Apple has painted themselves into a corner with all that huh? Can't add touchscreen to any laptops without reducing iPad sales, can't add more functionality to the iPad without reducing MBA and rMB sales...

When a product segment sees 20% declines quarter after quarter, its pretty much on its death bed.

And yet, iPad outsold MacBooks (and several other brands of laptops). And laptops outsold PCs. iPads are doomed! MacBooks are doomed! Apple is doomed! HP is doomed! PCs are doomed!

Where will it stop?

You nailed it.
I am still have the iPad 2 for my kids and 4 for me. I wasn't compelled to upgrade. While the Air is nice it is not a huge departure from the 4. Like me I believe tons of people hold on their tablets way longer than other iOS devices.

If they'd add the App Store as well I would ditch my iPad in a second.

I find iPad software too limited. IOS needs to be enhanced more to enable developers create richer software.

I can't replace my MacBook Pro for an iPad when it comes to productivity.

I guess it's tricky to include tablet PCs in these numbers. Many are buying Windows 8.1 PC tablets because they want both, while others need a real PC but happened to buy one that is in a tablet form. Should those be counted in the laptop market share comparison instead, in which case they would be competing against the Macbooks instead of the iPad? The lines are blurry.

The problem with that assumption is that Apple still sells 2.5 times more iPads than Macs.

Cheapest iPad sold as new is the original mini at $250. Cheapest current gen iPad is $400 (mini 3) / $500 (air 2). Cheapest Mac is the $500 Mini (byo k/m/m) or $900 (11" air).

That may have something to do with why iPads sell in such greater numbers.

LOTS of products "just last", but you don't see 25% declines quarter after quarter.

The tablet market is cratering. There's no two ways around that.

Yes but are any of these products a new category in the last 5 years where everyone started buying their first device?

Computers have been around for decades, so have fridges, TVs, even flat screen purchases fell a lot after everyone got one.
