iPad digital AV adapter - play sound from iPad?

Hi all,

So I'm using my dad's Apple digital AV adapter on my iPad to see if it's worth buying one myself. It looks good so far but at the moment the monitor I have does not have speakers, so is there a way to play the sound from the iPad instead?
