Quite Right! What better way for Apple to "enhance" the new product so soon after launch than to announce that it will get even better when... Apple likes the "enhanced" story line. They launch with something less than what we would like, but it is a quality product with "potential only if it could do this..." Then they follow up with the missing features in SW updates to sweeten deal when in fact the first release was simply lacking. iPhone 2G/3G/3GS are living examples. I predict that when the device becomes available for the general public, it will be torn apart and we will find there is HW in that bugger that is not being used... FM radio for example. Then, 4.0 will fill in gaps.
Exactly Evil, and the iPad JB is probably not far off. I love the multitask feature from Cydia, it allows me to keep Pandora and Skype resident while switching to other tasks. It does contribute to battery drain, but leaving it in the dock while working is a viable option for me.
I always expected multitasking to arrive on a full update too. I also think 4.0 is a very likely time for it to happen.
How long have we been saying "maybe multitasking will be in the next update!!!!" Apple has dropped the ball on this BIG TIME. The device is definitely powerful enough to multitask, play flash, run full desktop apps but what do they do? Close the market so they can use their, ever profitable App Store! This thing is junk. Jailbreaking it will be the only salvage for this device in my mind. It's ALMOST as portable as the iPhone! And ALMOST as robust as a Netbook!!! It's almost this, almost that which leaves me asking... What IS it? Jobs claims it's meant to fill in the gap between iPhone and Macbook right? So shouldn't it fill all the gaps? Instead this leaves HUGE gaps. Here's an ASCII chart: Code: iPhone iPad MacBook Very Portable Portable Portable Small Screen Big Screen Big Screen Weak Power Fast as Nexus One Powerful Limited Use Still Limited use + iWork Robust Use Restricted Apps Same Ol' App Store Any Apps * Relative distance between devices is indicative to gaps in market So you leave me still wanting a small device with keyboard that can get 3G and browse the internet with a full featured browser for web apps as well as the ability to install any app I want so I can play Pandora at the same time I chat online while web browsing... A netbook... Sorry Jobs, you really missed the target here.
The iPad isn't out yet, so you don't know if it has multi tasking or not. No one knows. It's just speculation at this point.
The iPad will be shipping in 60 days. That's in March. 3.0 was displayed in March. I believe we'll have a conference in March, showcasing 4.0 for both the iPhone and iPad, with multitasking, and some other new features. Then the iPad can release with those features.
And without allowing a Flash player to be installed in there, how is this the ultimate web browsing device?
Apple has a pattern and people are surprised they are...*gasp* following it? If they don't announce 4.0 in March, then let the bitching begin. Till then lets sit tight kthx.
After looking at the iPad, I dont know why but I am just not excited for it. A bigger version of an iPhone just doesn't tickle my interest that much.
NOTHING IN THE KEYNOTE EVEN SAID THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE MULTI TASKING ON THE IPAD!!! People are just assuming it!!!
I know. I was just pointing out that we here have been hoping for multi-task support in an update since the 3G was released.
I don't get the obsession with multitasking? I have an iphone and the existing apps that multitask are fine. I have never encountered a situation where I wished an additional app was "running." The only example people yell about is Pandora, which I don't use. Heck my iphone is jailbroken and I can background, and I never use it the feature. Oh wait, one time I was using skype and I needed to background it, but it wasn't a big deal if it didn't work as compared the the heart attacks folks seem to have about running "OOOH PANDORA" Can someone provide some real productivity gains for additional multitasking other than what is already that way on the iphone platform (phone, sms, ipod, etc)? One I can think of is VOIP apps so you can receive calls (i.e. skype), but again I have a PHONE so it's not such a huge loss.
= Palm Pre... It's a good thing not to have Flash - if it's video - go HTML5 and use ogg/On2 (if/when opened up/H.264). Multitasking? Not a biggie for the average user.
there is NO multitasking you must not have read any of the hands-on reviews of the iPad. http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/apple-ipad-first-hands-on/ look at the 4th bullet. there is NO multitasking. i repeat, NO multitasking.
