Seeing as how well the iPhone has done in Portable Gaming, What types of games might we see heading to the app store?

Might we see N64 quality games appear? Or maybe even better? If the iPhone can run GTA Chinatown Wars as well as it does, Might we be seeing an influx of 3D Worlds to play?

I'd love to play Goldeneye on it!

Personally I still prefer physical buttons for gaming especially higher paced games such as FIFA/PES, I can't ever see something like COD working on the iPad without a gamepad accessory. Although for strategy, puzzle, brain trainer type games then the iPad, like the iPhone, would work fine.

I'm unsure... Bigger and uglier iPhone games? A good solitaire could work pretty well. Other than that I want physical buttons to game with.

The demos by Gameloft, EA, Brushes, etc at the Keynote were impressive.

Seems like you can do more than just blow up your iPhone games, you can use new gestures, better graphics, use the screen space to your advantage...

I think the iPad will be an amazing gaming device. It combines the advantages of the Wii controller with screen gestures unavailable to any other gaming platform. I'm particularly a fan of racing games so I look forward with great anticipation to NFS: Shift in native iPad version.

I'm not a gamer but I wonder if a wireless (bluetooth) game controller can work on the iPad? Do they make such things?

The iPad could be a very good gaming platform, but the potential (and potential problems) are the same as on the iPhone. The imagination of the developers.

Particularly from major, established studio's there are far too many games on the App store that try to scale down and shoehorn console franchises (like Need for Speed, as an example) onto the smaller format.. and they're almost exclusively cack.

The iPhone is a great gaming platform because of games like DoodleJump and Flight Control.. unique games from smaller studio's that you can only really get on the iPhone as appose to home consoles or DS/PSP (even if Nintendo and Sony are attempting to weigh in on these sort of games themselves).

With the added screen real estate and power, the iPad could be good for gaming, but just like the iPhone it's success as a gaming platform will live or die on the back of the developers ingenuity.

I'd like to see some games along the lines of Starcraft, I heard that Majesty is coming to the iPad, which should be amazing. I'd also really like a version of Torchwood, or in other words a Diablo clone. As those depend on mostly mouse clicks, the transition should be excellent.

I have Final Fantasy 1 and 2 on my iphone (got them for my kid) i would not mind playing it on the ipad if a full size version came out. Music and plot are great for such a old game, for killing time would be great on ipad.

Street Fighter IV is pretty amazing on the iPhone, Brothers In Arms 2: Global Front is really good, I'd like to see League of Legends ported, WoW, WC3, SC2 etc...

Dungeon Hunter is another great RPG for the iPhone, all those iPhone games I mentioned would be fantastic on a larger screen!

The iPad is the new gaming toy

What would be incredible, is if a developer created a title similar to RUSE on the iPad. RUSE is already setup to support touch input as seen in this video. Something like this, an RTS, would be a blast to play on the iPad, of course probably not as detailed in terms of graphics quality.

I'm a star trek and star wars nute, so something along the lines of armada and empire at war would be amazing on the iPad.

TD games are a blast on the iPhone, I'd love to see what developers can do with the added screen size.

I'm excited about the possibility of games on the ipad, but worry about the interface with some games.

I know for puzzle/strategy type games, or any game where you simply click on things, that it will be perfect and the interface will suit it fine.

But, I wonder about games that need controls, like driving games or first person shooters. I know they can display virtual buttons on the screen, but will it be comfortable to hold the ipad and use the on screen buttons? I wonder since the border around the ipad may make it a little tough for people that don't have especially long fingers to press the on screen buttons over an extended period of time.

Hopefully it will be fine, but we'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Is it possible that we could see the iPhone or iPod Touch being a game controller for the iPad some time in the near future?

    buttons?

Someone could make a "gaming sleeve" for the iPad that included a connection to the dock, and put a series of tactile buttons over the bezel.

    unrelated:

I believe Starcraft 1 was designed for a native 1024 x 768... Seems that'd make a port of the game that much easier. But blizzard is so @#$%! it'll take them 5 years to do it, if at all...

Boardgames, GTA, AOE-type games, family games, word games (Scrabble, etc), racing and sports games, comics games, humorous games, chess against iPad and others with teaching strategy, Toobz-style games, Oregon Trail, Sim franchise, Touch4, ParaPanic/Sketchfighter, DoodleDots, quizzes, action games with external controller, card games, memory games, detective games, arcade games, art games, traffic rush, pool, Anno... the list goes on and on.

I think gaming might be one of the few areas that will save this thing.

Gaming is probably the #1 reason I'm getting one. The app store has LOTS of great games for the iPhone/ iPod touch, and I expect the trend to continue with the iPad. Fieldrunners, Plants vs. Zombies, Angry Birds, The Creeps, GeoDefense, Enigmo 1/2, Orbital, Ragdoll Blaster 1/2, Defender Chronicles, Isaac Newton's Gravity, Implode...I really can't wait to try these out on the iPad's large screen.

Even if the image quality is not as good because of upscaling, I'm betting the iPad will be very successful for gaming. Some games need physical buttons, but the ones that don't need it will rock on the iPad.

I too think gaming will be huge on this. I haven't played my PSP in ages now. Yes it's great to have tactical buttons on certain games but that's what my PS3 is for. Good cheap games are plentiful on the app store and i have plenty on my iphone. It would look so much better when native games are made for the native screen.

More RPG's and Adventure games please!

As others have mentioned, I think the iPad could be the as good, or better for (non competitive) RTS games.

I have recently been playing through Starcraft again, and while I will not hold my breath, it would be amazing to see it on the iPad. Some people have mentioned SC2, and while blizzard is great about having their games run on older tech, I really don't think something of that caliber graphics will show up at least for a few generations.

As for RTSs in general, just think of the possibilities of multi-touch controls / gesture recognition. And with the screen size, I think limited "hot key" controls could even be worked in such as having 10 buttons on the left hand side of the screen programmable to buildings or unit groups.
