Just curious, but is the reason you guys aren't completely sold on the iPad as a writing device because of the hardware or the software limitations. Hardware can be solved by a BT keyboard. Software will come over time.

The software is excellent - but the hardware is what is lacking (and something that cannot really be fixed)

A laptop has a bigger screen (which is particularly useful if you want to ZOOM into your documents and make the text bigger) and a MOUSE, which will prevent "gorilla arm"

If you really want a portable writing station, I would grab a MacBook Air - the iPad is awesome, but the touch screen affords itself better for graphic design and outlining - a writers dream though is a good, portable laptop

New Year, taking my writing more serious an developing a lot of really good projects. In the past I have done a lot of script writing and use FinalDraft - i'm excited that they are working on an iPad version, but I really want to get into novel writing.

Now I don't know if there's any specific software that writers use, I've only ever used Microsoft Office... So my questions is: Is an iPad good for a writer?

What software/apps would allow me to write with the iPad and then transfer to my iMac when at home?

Yes ipad is good for a writer.A writer can easily write on an ipad by using its various application. Its advanced applications Penultimate,Note Taker HD etc. allow writer to add pictures, graphics etc.The evernote software allows you to write with ipad and then you can transfer to transfer to imac phone.Evernote provides the synchronization between two devices.

very helpful thread

thanks to everyone for posting their experiences in writing with an iPad.

Due to wrist issues I unfortunately cannot use a laptop (just returned my MBA which I loved), so I will get an iPad and the BT keyboard. Ironically, I was thinking about an iPad 2 over a month ago for writing and other purposes.

Ironically for me, the trackpad on laptops are very limiting (and dead painful) so as useful as the MacBook Air can be for writers, it isn't for me. I hope the iPad and the BT keyboard (which I have no problems lugging around) will work.

Great to see the suggestion for Pages too. I've pretty much retired Word/Office from my home use, so it's good to know that the iPad and Mac versions of Pages do play nice.

I am looking forward to the Final Draft and MovieMagicScreenwriter iPad apps (I have the latter on my iMac).
