FWIW, the LTE has ended being my favorite feature of the new 2012 iPad and really the only reason I was reluctant to simply return, buy another iPad 2, and save 100 bucks. This was a feature I didn't think I cared about upgrading to from 3G but it is so much faster I don't think I could go back... I upgraded to new iPad and gave my husband my bright white beautiful iPad 2 so I could have a better screen...

I've just checked 5 display units in my Apple Store today, with my own iPad 3rd gen to compare.

Wow! I didn't imagine such a difference! :D My unit is kind of yellow (but not washed out...) and in comparison, Apple Store unit are really pink/purple. Definitely a real difference here. Also, this purple tint make the screen dimmer in comparison with my Pad. Not sure colors are more "accurate": but neutral grey looks definitely different between both units.

In the store, the panel uniformity is (really) difficult to check! When the iPad is 50-60% brightness, you barely see a thing on the screen, so impossible to check that point easily on location... Even my iPad doesn't seems that bad over there (full brightness in a high luminosity place) Pink/purple unit are clearly more similar to iPad 2 colorimetry (iPad 2 are used to display product informations: easy to compare) and display units need a higher brightness level comparatively to my own iPad (I'd say 75-80% = 60-65%).

Most display units are from february and come from factory DQ (China - Foxconn refurbished?)... Don't know if that's of any interest.

I have an appointment at the genius bar thursday. I'll see what they think of the situation. I'm a bit anxious because the uniformity problem is difficult to check over there. Mine is note good, but gosh, I've seen really bad and ugly display units (... green and pink!) in another store, so... this is Roulette.

Thanks for the experience Apple. No more day one purchase for me, I'm done.

Couldn't agree more with the issue of checking in the store. When I returned my first due to dust under the screen.....I checked out the replacement in the store....it looked fine under the bright lights of the store. Not so much once I got home.

I returned the iPad that I made the color measurements on at the beginning of this thread and purchased a new unit which is worlds better in terms of uniformness of the colors on a light colored screen. The overall tint is slightly warm, but not distractingly so. Much more pleasant reading experience now.

One thing I noticed immediately when I removed the new unit from the retail packaging was that the display and other settings were different. For example, the new unit had brightness set at 50% out of the box, whereas my previous two units were both originally set at 100%. The new unit also had cellular data turned off.

Interesting. Is there no pink at all?

I took mine in and the Apple Genius commented "wow your screen is pink compared to display units" before I said a word but then proceeded to tell me I would have to return within 14-day period as it "meets Apple's specs" and won't be returnable under Apple Care later for this issue. I just kept it - it's nice and even and I could end up with something far worse. Great QC, Apple!

Yes, I'm done with being a Launch Day guinea pig. No more new iPads or iPhones for me upon launch. Do you think I'll be able to keep this vow?

I guess they now have a very high tolerance level for defects or they were already told that a vast majority of screens will have that kind of result, at the end of the day as long as your happy with the product that is what matters even if it has a defect.

Amen to that! And I´ve bought every Apple product in the past years on day one.

FYI: The displays look the same in both Apple Stores in Hamburg! It really IS a lottery :(

Wasn't suggesting for a second that the OP not share. It's just that there are a few good threads on the topic already, and it might be helpful to keep screen color issues consolidated.
Don't need no consolidation.... Spread'em out.

"meets apple's specs", for average joes that is. It's called "Numb Specs". Apple has intentionally lowered standards to limit returns and exchanges.

Why?? What makes you think the later batches of the new ipads will not have the uneven tint issues? It will make no difference even if you wait a year or two. It's the limitation of screen technology and limitation of the Chinese factory.... 50 cent / hr labor guys. One of the displays I saw had dried snot under the screen. Amazing.

I think we need to coin a new word for those who scrutinize their iPad screens.
Instead of hypochondriacs (people who constantly think they are sick), we'll call them Macachondriacs.

You are trolling. From my original post:

It's very noticeable in Mail, Safari, iBooks, Notepad, etc., whenever it's necessary to read dark text against a light background. It's not noticeable for video or highly color saturated image viewing.

It's a defect, on a premium priced tablet from a company touting a revolutionary screen as the main selling point.

Since we don't know anything, there's no reason to conclude it's a limitation of the screen technology.

For all we know, the LCDs themselves are fine, but the new backlighting system is bad. The LEDs might be off color.

If someone were brave enough to disassemble one of the bad ones, we could see what happens when different light sources are used as backlighting.

There's no way Apple is just shrugging their shoulders on this. They're trying to keep it quiet at the retail level, but I find it impossible to believe people aren't scrambling and heads aren't rolling. As soon as someone drops a 2048x1536 IGZO in an Android tablet, all the reviewers are going to say how much better it looks than the iPad.

Riiight. Technology never changes in 2 years' time.

You might want to get your time machine checked, oh great future predictor.

In 2 years, Apple will most likely be using an entirely different screen technology altogether.

Your rants bring nothing to these discussions.

Whilst I would agree about the comment on the screen tech, it is a fair point that when using relatively low-paid labour, they are unlikely to perform at their best, hence not caring about or noticing things like dust, hairs, screen defects, etc

I would be interested to know if the workforce in Foxconn feel they are well rewarded for what they do?

I think the ABC report said most of them were still under China's poverty threshold, so I would say no...

And the crisp, white screen they show on the TV ads, what a joke compared to what you get. Keep trying. At least I got a fairly unifom pink screen the third time around.

If you set the white balance accordingly, you can make any iPad screen look crisp and white. They're hardly going to show a non-perfect on in a TV ad, in the same way you can be sure that any device anybody reviews has been cherry picked to have no defects.

Just got back from Best Buy with my 3rd iPad.

The upper left corner has an uneven pink tint. AGAIN. It's milder than the green-pink stain on the iPad I exchanged, but still unacceptable. I think I'll try my luck with Apple now, as I don't want Best Buy to blacklist me for exchanging "too many" iPads. FWIW, my last two iPads were manufactured on April 15th.

I haven't been this disapointed with an Apple product since my 2007 MacBook Pro succumbed to the dread Nvidia 8600GT...

I don't understand why Apple extended the release cycle for the iPhone 4S by six months -- despite it being a minor spec bump, and not the new iPad. While six months is an eternity in the mobile phone market, Apple's only competitor in the tablet market is Apple, so they had plenty of time to get it right. But it seems like they opted to cut corners with quality control instead. Perhaps an extra six months would've provided time to actually integrate Siri as well (assuming it wasn't an intentional omission).

I stopped at two returns. At some point that just gets ridiculous as well. I can live with what I have, or would have just gotten a refund. What I don't like are the pollyannas saying all is well and there is no problem with these screens. I know differently. In other words, don't leave a pile of steaming crap in the corner and tell me its chocolate ice cream.

Agreed! It's just that a person who was lucky and got a good unit on the first try would have a totally different opinion of Apple and the whole purchasing experience than someone who is having problems, and would tend to think the problem is with the person rather than the product. Just human nature, I guess, unfortunately...

I had dust on my first unit and a pink/green screen on the replacement so I got a refund. May try again in a few weeks, haven't decided. I'm actually quite surprised how happy I've been with my iPad 1 since I returned the new iPad!..
