I've always been able to use my iPod touch at school with the campus wifi. After connecting to the network and opening Safari it would take me to the log in page where I would input my student # and password. After hitting log-in I would be able to navigate to any other page or use any app.

After connecting to the network on the iPad, I open up safari and it tries to go to the same log in page. But instead, I get an error saying I have to update my Java to the latest version. What is going on here? Does the iPod have Java? Why would something like this work on the iPod but not the iPad?

Is it possible that when you were using your ipod touch that it was directing you to a mobile login page, and with the ipad it's going to a desktop one? Or is it the exact same page?

It's the exact page, I did a side by side test at school and they both opened the same page. But only the iPad failed at loading it and i received the "update your java" message. Even on my phone on wi-fi it redirects to that same page when first opening the browser.

Sounds like your school is doing some browser detection and if it thinks your on a Desktop or Laptop its using Java for the login and if it thinks your on a Mobile Device its using non-java login.

As the iPad is new your school probably hasn't set up the login system to use the non-java login when it detects an iPad.

By the way, your iPad not being able to connect as smoothly to your WiFi network doesn't mean it has "less features" than an iPod Touch 2G.

How does your issue have anything to do with your title? Less features?

Edit, Vesuvio Cat beat me to it!

If both of you take another look you can see this at the end of my title "?" That means I am asking a question. I'm not stating that it has less features, but am wondering IF it does since I am not able to use the Java page on the iPad. They both redirect to the same page, same web address.

    Since you're still in school...

    Wouldn't that be FEWER features?

To answer your question, no. The iPad does not have less features than the iPod Touch 2G.

"Does the iPad have fewer features than the iPod Touch 2G?" would be the proper way. <Sentence Fragment>? really doesn't work... Ever.

Regardless, it has nothing to do with your network issues

Either way it's doing some sort of browser detection and feeding your ipad something different that would be used on a normal computer.

Haha, I know, right? It would be different had the fragment been related to what their actual issue was, but it clearly wasn't. :)

All my stuff is pwned, hacked, etc. I really don't even need to post ever again, it's just fun checking every once in a while to see people who "found new ways to jailbreak a stock 3.1.3 firmware on a 3GS" when it clearly isn't possible.

I'm here for my own amusement, tbh ;) Some people just crack me up.
