My iPad's made about three trips out in public since I bought it. Everytime the reaction followed (roughly) the same sequence.

    1. Someone is first to say "oh hey, is that one of those iPads"?
    2. They ogle it.
    3. Someone else nearby or even with the first person pipes up with a laundry list of "missing features" or a luxury item speech.

Maybe I'm just unlucky or don't go to enough Starbucks but it's become humorously predictable.

Either you're unlucky or I'm lucky. I get nothing but "oooohs" and "ahhhhhs".

Exactly how I feel. Others can criticize it all they want, but what ultimately matters is that I like it and enjoy using it very much. I showed mine to my sister today and she was absolutely blown away.

All my friends get when they use it in public spaces is "Can you watch porn on that?"

Then again... said public space is usually highschool cafeterias.

We fail to mention the lack of flash when asked about the porn.

I'd really like this thing to get more popular so that I don't get looks whenever I use it in public.

Had to go to Springfield, MA the other day (I'm from NY) and people barely even knew what it was out there. I felt like I was in another world. Someone asked me if it was "one of those notebooks."

Thats why Newtons are much better. I take my Newton out in public and the following happens:

    1. They ask, "What the hell is that thing?"
    2. I explain what it is and show them handwriting recognition etc.
    3. They have their mind blown at how amazing Newton was and how impressive it is for its age.

What exactly do you do? I get an idea, but...

So amusing... your iPad's 256MB RAM makes it comparable to almost decade-old computers.

Because they are your friends and they know what's best for you.

Besides, crack cocaine is addictive and we don't go on and on about how good it is.

Agreed! It pisses me off. If you don't like it, don't look. I pissed a guy off who was doing that **** to me so I started commenting on his clothes and how they look straight from the 70s and how they are not in style and how his shoes were crappy because they had velcro straps and not laces. He got the idea pretty quickly.

I seem to remember a similar chain of events happening with my first iPhone- how did that turn out again???? Oh yes, everyone has them, including the early critics

It'd be funny if he was wearing a $120 shirt, $200 jeans and a $500 watch, you could've told him he bought luxury items when he could've gone to target and spent $100 on things that have all of those features and more...

I hate when people whine and moan about apple stuff because it's 'so expensive' and then go out and buy some overpriced bag or watch.

Although, i do love it, because I love showing people why theyre wrong. :)

It's not a computer. It never has been. Never will be. And it's not a computer replacement. It has *exactly what it needs* - with the OS *that it needs* - to be exactly what it's supposed to be.

I own one. It's perfect for what it is.

First time I took it out at work and started using it, 5 minutes later I had half the room around me looking at it. The consensus seems to be that the screen looks amazing and it's 'bigger than I thought', whatever that means?

I've had one dissenting voice but that was just someone trying to bait me. She knows nothing about tech and is suddenly an expert on iPads etc

I don't really take mine out of the house much (wifi only), but I feel a bit this way about my iphone4. Had a man wearing a pentium 2 t-shirt ask me 'is that the new iphone' as soon as I happily told him it was he started telling me all the problems with it I had. People really should shut up if they don't have anything nice to say.

Just read that back - maybe I should take my own advice!

I got two of my school teachers to by iPad's when I showed it to them in school. They absolutely love it.

Kids did tend to shout out it was worthless and they'd be better of with a laptop. Point is, it ISNT a laptop replacement!!!

The biggest place to see haters is a news web site forum. Any story about tech, especially Apple, and you'll get the whole litany of "wannabes who have to buy the latest worthless stuff to keep up with the Joneses" posters. Seriously, do they really believe that? That people would spend $500 or $1000 on something they never use just to say they are part of the crowd? Maybe their loser friends are like that, but I know no one that stupid or shallow.

Besides, as one poster noted, I'd love to go through these peoples' houses to see what "worthless crap" they've spend *their* money on. Unless someone lives in a house with four walls, a chair, bed and fridge, I'm pretty sure they've spent crazy money on at least some luxury item.

There is nothing wrong with the iPad that won't be perfectly acceptable in three years when Microsoft releases an equivalently spec'd zunePad. Enjoy and ignore.

False. It's a computer, just a different form factor of it. Having the same amount of memory as a decade old computer can be excusable, but should not be.
