ipad imessage emoji

On an ipad my fiancee cannot get emoji when using bluetooth keyboard only the on screen one.

When using bluetooth there is no option to add one.

Are we missing something or is it not possible?

There are keyboard shortcuts to pop up the emoji keyboard; typically the escape key- but sometimes F4 or F6, depending on the keyboard.
Then you reach up and touch the emoji you want, & press the same key as before to hide the on screen keyboard.

It depends on the keyboard you're using. On the apple Smart Keyboard there is a globe icon which brings up the emojis.
