Wow this is an old post. Sorry to revive a post that is two years old.
However, I thought it would be important to bring up some very relevant information regarding an iPad in the car.
There is an accessory called the PLX Kiwi Wi-Fi. It interfaces with the vehicles OBD port to work. It then creates a Wi-Fi network that your iPad iPhone or iPod touch can connect to. There are several apps that are designed to use this interface. When using these apps, specifically an app called "rev", it brings up live vehicle data and shows up to five gauges simultaneously like a vehicle four. You can customize these gauges to display pretty much any vehicle data parameter that is coming from the car's computer. You can display things like instant or aberage fuel mileage, boost, speed, coolant temperature, intake air temperature, or about 100 other different types of data. This app also let you read diagnostic trouble codes and reset the computer if your check engine light is on. The app is configurable to show one large gauge with a swept needle and numerical readout below it and then for smaller gauges in each corner of the screen.
There are a few other apps that utilize the same Wi-Fi to OBDII interface, but they are quite as sophisticated.
I think that it is really need to be able to have a live digital dashboard on the screen using an iDevice.
there is also a new system that just hit the market uses a similar interface but also allows you to load custom tunes to your car's computer to increase the performance based on vehicle modifications. But after looking at the app, it's not as sophisticated or good looking as the "rev" app previously mentioned.
