Any updates on Home Sharing for the iPad?

Since the last posting on this subject, a few things have happened:

- Air Video has been released for the iPad which so far works brilliantly, at least on myhome network. I have not been able to get it to work remotely - anyone have luck with that? It tells my my remote pin is not valid, even though I know I entered it correctly.

- Simplify Media's client and server software have gone away. Just gone. It was a great way to share music libraries remotely, but it seems to be dead. While you can probably find copies of the software still out there, they won't be supported and it's pretty unlikely that there will be an iPad app.

- Home Sharing appears to still not be enabled for iPads... at least, I have not figured out how to make it work if it is. Everything seems to be set up properly, my laptop can see my main library, my Apple TV can see it... but not my iPad. Anyone know the status of this functionality? Is it happening soon, can we expect it in OS 4, etc?

In the meantime, is there anything out there that accomplishes the same thing as Home Sharing (or better yet, Simplify)? I've been able to use DropBox to get a file playable from my remote machine, but it is by NO means an acceptable long-term solution.

Thanks for any guidance,

Mattynabib

I would like to see this too, only if they also had a way of deleting a song or movie off the ipad when you are finished, without a sync cable.

What the iPad really needs is an Apple TV "app" that lets you stream files from a local iTunes the same way an Apple TV does. Since the iPad has 802.11n networking and can handle all the formats an Apple TV can, I don't see why this can't been easily done. If they could come out with this, I think it would push me over the fence to getting one, vs waiting to see how they pan out.

You can delete a movie by swiping across its name in the listings for the 'delete' button to appear. It may work for songs too although I've not tried. It definitely works for podcasts so that would seem to be your solution.

When I'm at home I want to listen to music through speakers anyway, not the iPad itself, so the Apple Remote app works for me. However I would rather see it integrated into the iPod app on the iPad as a form of iTunes Sharing.

I think home sharing still only works across computers, not iPads. That said, it is the only way I can figure out how to share media and apps across iPads and computers. With home share enabled, my partner's computer can see my media and apps and move them to his iPad. But no, the iPad itself doesn't see the media other than what is loaded on it. Then again, it's not running OS X!

This is long overdue and to me a grave omission by apple. Is there any justification on why the iPad should cram everything up in max 64gbs photos, music, movies, apps, books etc? At even the max space it just can't with the size of our libs.

It's unacceptable to me that at least when at home you cannot point it to an iTunes library and have it browse it and stream from there.

Come on apple you know it needs to happen, make it happen, there's no excuse for the macs sharing libraries and the iPad not being able to do so!!!!!!

I urge everyone to leave feedback to apple on this!

this wouldnt work for films music but you could upload your photos to fliker and access it via your i pad and use there slideshow

I went googling for this myself today and came across this thread.

It dawned on me however, that its not really in Apples interest to release a feature like this. Think about it; it makes capacity and storage superfluous. If you have the ability to stream media from a networked device, you're less likely to buy a higher memory device, thus lowering the revenue made on sales of these higher spec higher cost devices.

Unless Apple suddenly grows a conscience, I doubt we will see this feature anytime soon. Will keep an eye on this thread though if anyone has alternative solutions to the problem.

There are indeed 3rd party apps that get you almost there (e.g. Filebrowser) but not with support for drm/iTunes store purchased video content. The storage argument is a thought....

For portable devices we do think in terms of storage capacity allowing us to buy and carry the content with us. But witness the new apple tv 2g where storage was completely ditched in favor of a rental-only model. You cannot purchase content with ATV2 directly. For video content at least, Apple here seems to be discouraging the notion of owning a local copy and instead is pointing us in the direction of clouds. So, yes, in this case (ATV) Apple has indeed chosen to make storage superfluous.

Good iPad app

The solution I use to stream all kinds of media to my ipad is a little app called Plex. It's really awesome. Streams video, music, photos etc. You install a media server program on your mac and buy the app (If i remember correctly it was about $5 AUD). It has all sorts of other cool features too but I won't list them here.

It is a pity though that Apple won't (hasn't) given us the ability to automatically connect to shared libraries on our LANs.

Ah well...Plex is great meantime.

Hope this helps :)
