More like 1000:1.

Until the geeks and general idiots understand that, they'll be confused and bewildered.

I'm sure this is part of the reason you get such arguments on MacRumors. This is mostly a geek crowd, but the iPad is aimed at the general population. Geeks keep pointing out all the geek flaws in the iPad, and the general population keeps buying them up happily. Geeks get madder, general population never notices.

You need to send this message by way of drums :p

(Joking!)

Seriously, I think Apple would be happy to have more business including those in grass huts. But different countries have different restrictions and taxes and internet providers and Apple has work this all out with this new product. Their tendency with such products is to get them out in chunks--North America first, certain European countries next, etc. Looks like they're not only taking their time hammering out the details with each group, but also making enough to go around, as each time they add a group they have to make more. Very sorry that African countries are on the tail end of it all.

Have you written to Apple directly? I think you should.

Thanks for the info.

I have emailed my local iStore in Durban which was like bashing my brains out with a rock! They know even less than me about the iPad's release here - although they are stocking all the accessories.
The trouble is that there are a lot of rip-off artists importing iPads and flogging them to consumers at hideously inflated prices.
It's wierd because I was able to buy the newest MacBook Air literally the week after it was released from the local iStore - so they do get some products at the same time as the North American release.

Oh well, I have a friend traveling to Germany in February - guess where he'll be shopping? ;)

Well, to be fair to the general population, Geeks often focus their imagination on what they want to do with such devises and not what anyone else might want to do with them; so if it doesn't do all the Geeks want it to do, they do tear it apart and dismiss it.

When I saw the iPad the first thing I thought was that Apple had created something that could be adapted to a lot of different needs--exactly as commercials for it now show. When I pointed this out, I got poo-pooed by many Geeks. They said "Doctors will never use this because...." and "Plumbers already have such a device...." etc. Yet I look around now and what I saw happening is happening.

I wonder why so many of the Geeks I spoke with were so sure the general population would stick with it's old devices and ways of doing things and refuse to try something new. I wonder why they didn't see what I saw--how infinitely adaptable it was.

It does Apple no good to create something that comes across as a Geek dream rather than as something that could be used to entertain a toddler, help run a small business or be given to a technophobic senior citizen. Though Apple has had it's share of flops, it's a company that knows how to get non-Geeks to see what can be done with such technology--how it can be used in their daily life. Other companies come out with tablets, phones, etc. that might be equal or better to Apple's, but Apple succeeds by knowing how to design such devices in ways that allow people to see and understand all they can do with them.

Exactly. And again, while they're vocal (there's one in this thread), they absolutely in the minority. A very tiny minority.

Apple understands this, which is good. "...for the rest of us" indeed.

Another telling sign is when people complain about specs. "The CPU is too slow" or "Not enough RAM" and so on. I'd suggest that people focus more on what it DOES than what the specs of the device suggest it might do. But hey, everyone's a hardware, firmware and software expert right?

Do you think Apple with continue to make iPad1 models as well as making the new iPad 2 models?

Will they keep supplying the old iPad1 to these new countries whilst the rest of us are buying the iPad2 models?

Wonder how this will work?

Do you really think anyone here knows?

Apple's Latest Restriction. Now available in eleven more countries. The couch crowd goes wild!

Yes,no other company releases products in different countries at different times. We just got the Smart car over here long after it was out in Europe as one example.Pretty common.I'd think it's better to do it that way that to spread the supply so thin worldwide that people get frustrated and give up.

How lovely, about 8 months late. I don't get why they are even bothering now if the new iPad is on the way in a few months.
The new iPad will be out around April at the earliest. The January announcement for the first iPad was a one off. Apple rarely, if ever, announces a product months in advance, so I really can't see it happening again.

It wouldn't surprise me too much if they delay a bit more and launch v2 alongside the new iPhone or iPods. It would certainly give Apple more time to fully roll out v1 to more countries.

About time!
A real shame it took them 8 months to bring it over here though, and hence that it will not sell well. Because:
1. Those who wanted one have already imported one on their own.
2. Or they realize that is 8 months overdue and wait for the 2. generation.

Hopefully Apple value all their customers equally the next time and release iPad 2 worldwide at the same time.

Dear Mr Jobs
Here at the ass-end of Africa some of us do have electricity and even computers (yes, even Macs). We don't all have bones through our noses and grass skirts. So when the @#$# are we getting the iPad!!

It sounds like you may have identified a profitable black market business for yourself. So now many beads and bangles will you charge for a basic iPad? ;)

Haven't you heard? It's magical! The new huge building on the east coast will be boosting the Reality Distortion Field to blanket the world. Soon people in South Africa will be holding up a two year-old iPad and saying to their friends, "Have you seen this? They're NEW!" ;)

So is iPad 2 availability also going to be delayed for these countries by almost a year?

These releases make me think the iPad 2 is farther out than most may think or still on target for a sometimes predicted April 2011 launch. Obviously, I could be wrong but how long was it between the US release of the 3GS and the last country to get the 3G? I don't know how adequate it is to compare the 1st gen iPhone to the 3G. Who knows?

I would think that the iPad will be available to more countries faster in the 2nd cycle though fueling to me even more reason around April 2011.

-_- WHENNN are they going to stop underestimating Brazil's markets and launch products here sooner??? There's already a huge black market for iPads since their launch in the US..

Developing countries= more consumption = more profit. ...
