I just received my macbook air 16/256 and i am disappointed that the media consumption apps aren't available in the app store. Those apps have some specific features (like being able to download offline versions) that i was hoping to be able to use while i was traveling. Am i missing something?

It's up to individual App owners to decide if they want to make them available in the App Store for Macs. I have heard that many of those types of Apps have not made them available.

I wonder if Apple is not wanting to cannibalize iPad sales? I may return this and get the air ipad

If you side load the Netflix app beware the screen size is not resizeable.

Moreover, Scrolling, device orientation, location services, accelerometers, etc all have to be accounted for In mobile apps. Many indie developers will opt out as there is significant retooling to consider without much monetization opportunities.

Search for Android support on Chromebook. While there has been excitement over it for years, the implementation has been Quite a struggle. If you’ve ever loaded an iPhone app to iPad that is not developed for iPad, you’ll understand what the experience will be like on a large screen not meant to be touched.

I was hoping some of those media apps would make it across, maybe we will see more with time.

As it is I have loaded one app I regularly use (Apollo for Reddit) and I must say it is surprisingly good, including having the widget in my sidebar.

The app developers are the ones who decide if their apps will be usable on Mac OS, not Apple. Facebook already said that most of its apps won't be migrated to the Mac (although in their case it's related to their desire to generate ad revenue from the website itself). The iPad is still a better tool for many use cases than the Mac, because of its form factor, touchscreen, and Apple Pencil support. Whether or not developers allow their apps to be run on Mac OS has no bearing on Apple and whether or not iPad sales are cannibalized in the process of releasing these new machines.

Imo ipad is worse for media since it has a 4:3 display that gives large black bars on the top and bottom of video. Good for browsing though.

My iPad is my go-to media device for in bed or when out in an environment where pulling out a MacBook would not work (nowhere to rest it). Otherwise it is my MacBook for that very reason. Like it or not 16:9 is the de facto standard and so a 4:3 screen is always going to have black bars.

Of course being able to have a dual monitor setup with two high quality displays in my bag is great for creating a workspace wherever I am.

I actual find the flat base and pivot on a laptop much easier to place in nearly all circumstances for me - and I can swap windows much easier if a message comes in, for example, and not have it stop what I’m playing.

I also need a full browser to get into work apps.

was hoping this would be the only device I’d need to bring when I travel - I hate bringing both an iPad and a laptop.

also there are certain ways outlook and onedrive for iOS that allows it to be locked down that make it suitable to meet company policy but Microsoft didn’t release the iOS version of their apps either - so another tool I was hoping to use isn’t available.

for now isn’t going to meet my needs (I already have a perfectly sufficient windows machine but need a more current iPad)

I was hoping the full iPad and iPhone library would be available. I’m sure Apple will be fine after I return and wait to see what develops
