iPad mini (3) and *.nrw (raw) files

Does any have experience with moving (Nikon P7800) *.nrw (raw) files from a SD card to an iPad mini (3)? Is it possible with the Apple lightning - SD reader or will that just read jpegs? PS: no need to edit them on/with the iPad mini, just store them (as back up, whilst travelling).

As long as a Mac can read the raw files, the iPad will import raw only. Uses the embedded JPEG for display if no corresponding JPEG is available.
